It was then that I opened my hand and showed the ring. It is a pity that you were not there to see Mr cartier's face. What a mixture of astonishment, joy and thankfulness!
As for that Amarican, he was out of the shop that instant, like a shot from a gun.
‘ How....how did you find it ?’ gasped Mr cartier, falling into chair.
‘Well, ’ I being, ‘ from the first that fellow seemed a strange customer for us. That type of American does not come to us as a rule. They want something more modern and shower than what we shall. Beside, he didn't know what they want and they generally know something about antique jewellery. And so, William morris said to himself myself. ‘Why has he come to us ?’
‘Right, quite right,’ said Mr cartier. That was very clever of you, william.’
‘Then,’ I continued, ‘ there was the young woman. I saw her standing about for quite a while, looking at the display opposite.’
‘The undertaker's ?’ said Mr cartier. ‘How very strange!’
‘That is what I thought. And why was she waiting about all that time if he interested to come in? Why did she bring a cheap brooch to repair? Everyone knows that cartier's has nothing to do with cheap trinkets and never does cheap repairs.’
