“So how have you been?” Nathan asked as I sat on the recliner.
“I’ve been better. A lot has happened since you left,” I told him looking down at my hands.
“Yea, Luke told me about your dad getting out of jail. Has he tried contacting you guys?” he asked getting closer to me.
“Yea. He tried to get us to go stay with him, but we were able to get the court to agree with us and let us stay with Sebastian and Jessica. I still haven’t told Sam. I don’t know how to, he’s going to hate me,” I said pulling my knees to my chest.
“He’s not going to hate you. I mean, he might at first, but if you remind him of what your father did was he’ll forgive you.”
I nodded and sighed. “I hope so, but I don’t think he’ll be too happy with me at first.”
He nodded and a comfortable silence fell over the room. “Do you still have those pictures? Maybe if you showed them to Sam, he’ll understand better.”
“I don’t. My mom deleted them from the camera because she didn’t want me to use them against him,” I said biting my lip. This conversation sucked. I just wanted to kick him out and start crying. He’s the only one beside Luke, Sebastian and my mom that knew my dad used to beat me if I had bad grades or came home late from school. He didn’t approve of my friends, so I wasn’t able to get a phone until him and my mom split. It started out with the occasional slap, but turned into punches and kicks. When I was 13 he pushed me down the stairs and I ended up breaking my ankle. My mom paid it no mind though. Well until he started hitting her. That’s why she left him. None of us had the courage to tell Sam, so we let him believe what he wanted. It wasn't the best thing we could do, but he was only eight when it happened. I haven't had the nerve to tell him because I knew he wouldn't believe me. I didn't have the proof anymore. It would have been easier to tell him back then, but I didn't want to ruin the perfect image he had for his father. He didn't deserve that. I didn't deserve his hate, but I managed just fine with it.
“Come here,” he said summoning me to his side. I stood up and sat down beside him. He pulled me closer and I began crying. I hadn’t cried in so long.
I think at some point I had ended up falling asleep because next thing I knew it was the next day. I woke up and felt a pair of arms wrapped around my waist. I turned and saw Nathan.
His eyes fluttered open. “Hey, sorry I just didn’t want to leave you alone last night,” he said letting me go.
“Oh, it’s fine, um thank you,” I said giving him a small smile.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” he said sitting up and reaching for something on the nightstand. “Happy birthday.” He handed me a small present. “I hope you like it, I couldn’t find the right one, but I thought this one was nice.”
I smiled and opened it revealing a gold necklace with a heart shaped pendant that looked like it was made of gears. I had mentioned before that I had seen this gorgeous heart shaped necklace that was gold and black with small white pearls, but it had sold out the next day. “Thank you so much Nate. It’s beautiful.” I pulled it out of the box and handed it to him. He took it and clasped it around my neck.
“Are you sure you like it? I tried to get the other one, but it was already sold out when I tried to get it,” he asked with worry in his eye.
“Yes, I’m sure. It’s perfect. Thank you,” I said giving him a hug.
“So, what do you want to do today?” he asked as we pulled away.
“Let’s go somewhere interesting. Is your dad still a pilot?” I asked getting out of bed only to be greeted by a cold rush of air.
