extended summary
Everyone has a bad habit. Some people chew their nails or pop their knuckles; Ashton's is sticking his nose in other people's business. Harmless gossip was his guilty pleasure—until he crossed the line from listening to stirring the pot.
When Ashton's orchestrated rumors spiraled into a surprisingly true scandal, he managed to keep his involvement a secret—until he accidentally confessed to his sister, who immediately exposed him to their dad. Furious, his father "banished" him from Montana to Forks, Washington, midway through his sophomore year. Now, under the watchful eye of his father's right-hand man, Ashton is dropped into a rainy, washed-out town full of people he can't quite figure out.
Assigned a reluctant school guide, Leah Clearwater, Ashton quickly realizes Forks might be grey, but Leah is anything but. Blunt, fierce, and painfully honest, she's a refreshing contrast to the polished facades he knew back in Montana. Leah, however, has her own problems: her ex, Sam, mysteriously reappears only to break her heart, a bear attacks her cousin, and Sam is suddenly dating Leah's cousin. Then, her father dies unexpectedly, and what little confidence she had left seems to shatter.
Though they hardly speak after her father's death, something about Leah's situation strikes a nerve for Ashton. On a whim, he decides to do something small—he makes Leah a cupcake. It's ridiculous, with bright pink frosting and a cheesy note attached. Leah's reaction? She tosses it without a second thought, but Ashton catches a hint of something in her expression, maybe even a smile. And that tiny flicker of reaction is enough to keep him going.
Day after day, he leaves a new cupcake for her, each one more over-the-top than the last. Her younger brother, Seth, even starts noticing, popping up now and then to inspect Ashton's "creations" and teasing Leah about her "cupcake admirer." But for Leah, the wall between them remains firmly up, her attitude unchanged.
Then, after three years, Leah finally catches him outside her house, holding yet another cupcake box, clearly avoiding eye contact. She's as exasperated as ever, but instead of turning away, she stays put. Unsure of what else to do, Ashton begins talking, rambling even. When he finally falls silent, he braces for her typical brush-off, finally making eye contact with her.
But Leah doesn't move. She just stares, as if seeing him for the first time, like something has shifted between them.
Little does Ashton know, that Leah has imprinted on him.
