Chapter 17

The sun streamed through the kitchen window, casting a golden hue over the breakfast table where Kylie was absentmindedly scrolling through her phone. She was waiting for Malia, who had promised to join her for a quick breakfast before they both rushed off to their respective commitments. The air was filled with the rich aroma of coffee brewing, and the faint sound of toast popping from the toaster punctuated the otherwise quiet morning.

Just as Kylie was about to check the time, Malia burst through the door, her expression a whirlwind of emotions. There was an anxious energy radiating off her, causing Kylie's heart to race slightly.

"Hey, babe! You're late!" Kylie called out, trying to lighten the mood.

Malia didn't respond immediately; instead, she leaned against the door frame, her eyes wide and serious. "Kylie, we need to talk."

Kylie's stomach dropped. The weight in Malia's voice was palpable. "Okay... What's up?" She gestured for Malia to sit down, her heart pounding in anticipation.

Taking a deep breath, Malia slid into the chair across from Kylie, her hands trembling slightly as she clasped them together on the table. "So, um... I took a test this morning," she began, her voice shaky. "And it's positive."

Kylie blinked, processing Malia's words as a whirlwind of emotions began to swirl inside her. "Positive? As in... pregnant?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Malia nodded slowly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I didn't know how to tell you. I'm scared, but... also excited?" She swallowed hard, her emotions bubbling just beneath the surface.

Kylie's heart raced. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind—what this would mean for them, how their lives would change, and the dreams they had just begun to talk about. "Wow, this is... big," she managed, her voice thick with emotion.

"I know," Malia said, biting her lip, "but I want you to know I'm in this with you. I'm terrified, but I want to face this together."

A silence settled between them, heavy yet charged with possibility. Kylie reached across the table, taking Malia's hands in her own, squeezing them gently. "We'll figure it out," she said, her heart swelling with a mixture of fear and determination. "I mean, it's unexpected, but we've been dreaming of having a family, just not this soon. It's... it's still what we wanted, right?"

Malia's gaze softened, and a smile broke through her anxiety. "Yes, it's exactly that! But it's also scary. What if we're not ready? What if this changes everything?"

Kylie stood up abruptly, pacing the small kitchen as her mind raced. "Of course, it's going to change things, but that doesn't mean it's going to be bad. We're both strong, and we can support each other through anything." She paused, turning to face Malia. "I mean, we'll have to lean on our families and friends too. They'll want to help us."

Malia nodded, her eyes brightening at the thought. "You're right. I have no idea how my mom is going to react, though. And our sisters... what do we even say?"

"We take it one step at a time," Kylie replied, her heart steadying as she spoke. "We're going to be parents, Malia! We're going to need all the support we can get, but we're not alone in this. We can do this together."

A tear slipped down Malia's cheek, and she laughed through her emotions. "It's just so overwhelming. I didn't think we'd be here so soon."

Kylie stepped forward and wiped the tear away with her thumb, holding Malia's gaze. "Life throws us surprises, huh? But I wouldn't want to do this with anyone else. We're going to make it work."

Malia nodded, her heart swelling with affection for Kylie. "I love you so much for being here. I'm glad we're facing this together."

"I love you too," Kylie said, her voice full of sincerity. "We'll learn as we go. It won't always be easy, but I promise I'm not going anywhere."

They both took a deep breath, their minds settling into the reality of the situation. Malia's heart raced with excitement, and although fear lingered, it was joined by an overwhelming sense of hope.

"So," Kylie said, breaking the tension with a playful grin, "do you have any cravings yet? I hear that can start early."

Malia chuckled, her mood lightening as she glanced at the breakfast spread on the table. "Honestly? I'm feeling a bit of a strawberry vibe right now."

"Strawberries it is! We'll get you some, and maybe I can make you a smoothie or something?" Kylie said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

"Sounds perfect," Malia replied, her heart feeling lighter with each passing moment. "And after that, we should probably sit down with our families, right?"

Kylie nodded, her resolve strengthening. "Yeah."

Together, they began planning their next steps, their hearts intertwined with excitement and trepidation for the journey ahead. They knew that whatever challenges awaited them, they would face them together, hand in hand, ready to embrace their new life as partners and soon-to-be parents. The world outside felt a little less daunting now that they had each other to rely on, and with that comforting thought, they stepped boldly into their shared future.
