Thora had told herself she would let go. She had resolved to stop searching for Reneo’s attention, to move on, to heal. But every time she saw him, a part of her crumbled, and she found herself right back where she started, clinging to the hope that maybe, if he saw how much she cared, he would feel something too.

One evening, she attended a gathering on campus—a small event her friends had convinced her to go to. She was hesitant, knowing Reneo might be there, but in the end, she agreed. She hoped that being around friends and laughter might make things a little easier, might help her start to let go.

But as soon as she arrived, she saw him standing with a group of students, Mila by his side, laughing at something he had said. Her heart twisted, but she took a deep breath, reminding herself to stay composed. She was here to enjoy herself, to try and find a piece of her old self, the part of her that didn’t revolve around him.

Yet, as the night went on, she found herself watching him, her gaze drifting to where he stood, hoping for even the smallest sign that he would notice her. Finally, she gathered her courage, and when he happened to glance in her direction, she gave him a small, hopeful smile.

To her surprise, he returned the smile, but it wasn’t warm or inviting. Instead, he looked at her with an almost mocking expression, a slight smirk that made her heart sink. Before she could process it, he turned to Mila and whispered something, loud enough for those around him to hear but quiet enough that she had to strain to catch the words.

"Looks like someone doesn’t know when to give up," he said, his voice carrying a sharp edge, each word piercing through her like shards of ice.

A few people in his circle laughed, and Mila shot Thora a pitying look that made her cheeks burn. She felt a wave of humiliation wash over her, the sting of his words hitting deeper than she had expected.

She wanted to look away, to pretend she hadn’t heard, but her feet felt glued to the spot. She could feel the eyes of the others on her, judgmental, pitying, amused. The once-familiar warmth she had felt around him was gone, replaced by a chill that left her feeling small, insignificant.

One of Reneo's friends nudged him playfully. "Come on, man, maybe she’s just that into you."

Thora’s face flushed as the laughter grew around her. She wanted to defend herself, to tell them it wasn’t true, that she wasn’t some lovesick girl who couldn’t take a hint. But the words wouldn’t come, and all she could do was stand there, feeling the weight of their ridicule press down on her.

Reneo glanced at her one last time, his gaze cold and dismissive, as if she was nothing more than an annoyance, something he had to endure. And in that moment, she saw the truth—that he had no intention of ever meeting her halfway, that he wasn’t just indifferent, he wanted her gone.

The finality of it settled over her like a stone, crushing the last remnants of her hope. She had clung to him, even when he’d rejected her, because she believed that maybe, deep down, he still cared. But now, she saw how wrong she had been.

---

With trembling hands, Thora turned and walked away, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill. She left the gathering, her steps quickening as she put distance between herself and the humiliation she’d just endured. She could hear faint whispers, quiet laughter following her, but she didn’t look back.

She found herself in a quiet spot on campus, away from the lights and the noise, and finally, she let herself break. The tears came fast, hot and relentless, each one a painful release of everything she had been holding onto for so long.

She had loved him. She had given him her heart, her trust, her loyalty. And in return, he had reduced her to a joke, someone to laugh at, someone to dismiss.

The weight of it all settled over her, and for the first time, she felt the sharp, undeniable truth: it was over. She couldn’t keep chasing him, couldn’t keep hoping for something that would never come. He didn’t want her, and he had made that clearer than words ever could.

---

The next morning, Thora woke up with a new sense of resolve. The ache in her chest hadn’t disappeared, but something had shifted. She had been humiliated, broken, but she knew now that she deserved more than someone who would treat her like a passing amusement.

She spent the day focusing on herself, on the things she had neglected while chasing after him. She met with her friends, threw herself into her studies, and bit by bit, began to reclaim the parts of herself that she had lost.

It wasn’t easy. Every now and then, she would think of him, the hurt would resurface, and she would feel the sting of his rejection all over again. But she reminded herself of the humiliation she had felt, of the coldness in his eyes, and it strengthened her resolve to move forward.

For the first time in a long time, she felt the beginnings of freedom, a small, fragile hope for a future where her heart wasn’t tied to someone who didn’t value it.

---

And as the days passed, she began to find peace, slowly but surely, knowing that one day, she would look back on this chapter of her life with gratitude for the lessons it had taught her. Because now, she understood her worth. And she knew she would never again settle for someone who couldn’t see it.
