This was something that happened in the actual campaign itself. Basically, the party was transported to a dream scape, and each character experienced a nightmare about their past (everyone witnessed each dream). Merry's dream sequence took place in a forest. Each tree had the face of someone in her hometown. Then, River showed up with an axe and started chopping down trees. There was also a large fire that broke out. So yes, more symbolism!!

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Merry is an alcoholic, and this is her when she worked on a flying party ship (after her exile from her hometown, ofc)

This is that big conflict moment between Merry and River when she found out that he was a traitor. She poked her claws in his arm so deep that he now has scars right there
