The next day, on our way to the lab where Steve would be experimented on, we were riding in a cab. I sat in the front beside the driver and Peggy and Steve sat in the back. I monitored their chatter, which was quite amusing.

"I know this neighborhood," Steve commented as we passed a group of children playing in the streets. "I got beat up in that alley." He pointed to an alleyway. "And that parking lot, and behind that diner." Steve—I observed—was either extremely bad at fighting or extremely gullible. Both are quite prominent in men.

Steve looked down in disappointment.

"Did you have something against running away?" Peggy asked him. She was good at asking personal questions that were easy to answer.

Steve shook his head rapidly. "You start running, they'll never let you stop. You stand up, you push back. They can't say no forever, right?"

I smirked. "As fluent as Shakespeare, Steven," I spoke in a flowy British accent. Steve chuckled.

"I know a little of what it's like, to have every door shut in your face." Peggy spoke elegantly.

"I guess I just don't know why you'd want to join the Army if you were a beautiful dame." Steve had a way with making us—women in general—uncomfortable. "Or...a beautiful woman. An agent. Not a dame. You are beautiful, but..."

I snorted.

Peggy had no compulsion to not point out the obvious. "You have no idea how to talk to a woman, do you?"

Steve chuckled. "I think this is the longest conversation I've had with one."

"Peggy is more than one. She is everything." I smiled.

"If you think so highly of her, then you talk to her." Steve hummed.

"That's not my job, is it, Steven?" I shot back, in a non-threatening way.

Steve chuckled again and continued his conversation with Peggy. "Women aren't exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on."

"You must have danced," Peggy replied.

"Well, asking a woman to dance always seemed so terrifying." Steve continued, "And the past few years, it just didn't seem to matter that much. I figured I'd wait."

"For what?" Peggy seemed genuinely curious, and Steve gave her an answer.

"The right partner."

When we arrived at the lab, it didn't seem like much. Actually, we walked into an undercover antique store. Looking around, the place seemed dusty and old, like most shops along this street. I had been here frequently, to this lab, for other experiments. Some were successful, most failed. Science always interested me. When I was standing in an experimental lab, I felt smart. Not that I was, but it's a nice feeling. That's where Howard Stark and I had something in common, except he actually is quite smart.

An older lady, Eunice, came out from the back. I had become fond of Eunice. She was always nice, but a little shy.

"Wonderful weather this morning, isn't it?" Eunice smiled.

"Yes, but I always carry an umbrella," Peggy replied. With that, Eunice walked behind the front desk and pressed a button on the side. A buzzing sound comes from the counter and Peggy leads us behind the curtain to the back of the store. A bookshelf opens from in front of us, revealing a hallway that leads to the lab. Doctors and scientists roam around the halls and we pass by them through the double doors. The doors lead to an open room, control panels surrounding a large platform.
