Faye
Faye Rivers sat in her math class, anxiously biting her fingernails. Today was the day—the moment she would finally get her last exam result. She'd aced every other subject, but a knot of worry tightened in her stomach as she thought about her math final. As her teacher moved through the rows, handing back papers, Faye replayed the test questions in her mind, hoping she had done enough.
"What is this?" Faye wondered, staring at her exam paper in disbelief. She glanced around the room; her classmates looked just as puzzled. "What...?" she whispered, almost to herself. "I didn't study this..." Hesitantly, she picked up her pencil and began working through the equations, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of them. She flipped through each page, double-checking the trickiest questions, before finally handing her exam to the teacher with a nervous sigh.
Mrs. Taylor placed Faye's test paper face down on her desk. Taking a deep breath, Faye picked it up and flipped it over. Her heart sank as she saw the bright red number circled at the top. She felt a burning sensation in her throat and nose, struggling to hold back tears. "I'm not accepting this grade," she whispered, trying to steady herself. The bell rang, and she watched as her classmates filed out of the room.
Quickly, she grabbed her bag and approached her teacher's desk. "Mrs. Taylor," she began, voice trembling. "I was just one question away from passing. Is there any chance I could retake it or earn some extra credit?" she pleaded. "I'm afraid not, Miss Rivers," Mrs. Taylor replied gently. "Since it's your final exam, there are no makeups, and I'm not allowed to offer extra assignments. I'm truly sorry, but I'm afraid you'll just have to retake this class during summer school."
Faye felt off for the rest of the day, weighed down by the thought of telling her parents. When she finally got home, she walked into the kitchen, shutting the door quietly behind her. "How was school today, love?" her mother asked as she noticed Faye's somber expression. "It was... okay," Faye replied, trying to keep her voice steady. Her father looked over from the couch. "Did you get your test grades back?" "Yes..." she answered, nerves creeping into her voice. She set her backpack on the kitchen island and slowly began taking out her exam papers, her heart pounding as she prepared for the conversation she'd been dreading all afternoon.
Faye handed the papers to her mother, who studied her daughter's face, sensing her worry. Faye watched as her mother's gentle smile faded upon reaching the last paper. "Oh, honey..." her mother murmured softly, trying to keep her tone reassuring. Faye dropped her gaze, feeling a surge of shame. "It's alright, dear," her mother said, passing the papers to her father, whose quiet sigh of disappointment cut through the room. "You'll just have to do summer school," he said, his voice resigned. Her mother kept comforting her, speaking words of encouragement, but Faye couldn't shake the subtle note of disappointment she heard beneath it all.
When Faye didn't come down for dinner, her mother left a plate at her bedroom door with a gentle knock. Faye opened the door, took the plate quietly, and sat down at her desk, though her appetite was nearly gone. Her mind spiraled, fixating on how this grade might impact her future. "Will a school like Harvard even consider me if they see summer school on my record?" she wondered bitterly, a hollow laugh escaping as the question echoed in her mind.
As she pushed her half-eaten meal aside, determination began to flicker within her. Faye took a deep breath, her mind shifting from despair to resolve. "I won't let this define me," she vowed silently. "I'll work harder, study smarter, and prove that I belong where I want to be." Faye grabbed a notebook and pen, ready to create a plan for the summer, she was committed to turning this setback into an advantage, no matter the obstacles ahead.
