My daughter's too young to really understand I Spy, so we have our own variation. It's actually pretty fun: one of us closes our eyes, while the other one describes something that they see. Then you guess if what they've described is real or not. Kind of a test of memory and of imagination.
Baby girl's got her eyes closed, chubby little hands over her face. I glance around the room. "Hmm. I see... a brown and white couch with little flowers on it and two brown pillows," I say. I can't make it too hard on her. "True or false?"
She grins and wiggles where she sits on the floor in front of me. "True!" she calls.
"Yes, it's true!" I say, applauding her. She joins in, clapping as she blinks her eyes open again. "Your turn."
"Close your eyes, Daddy!" she shrieks happily. When I comply, putting my face in my hands, she hums to herself for a moment, thinking. At length, she says, "I see a man."
I don't laugh, though I'm tempted. She's very young, very literal. She actually "sees" me pretty often in this game. The hardest part of playing this with her is getting her to actually describe something. "Tell me what the man looks like," I coach. "Be descriptive."
"Okay. I see a man wearing all black and he has a big red smile," she says. "True or false?"
Surprised, I decide to cheat a little, glancing down at my clothes. I'm wearing khaki shorts and a green polo. Tricky girl! "False!" I say, catching her out.
She laughs victoriously. "Nope! Fooled you!"
"What?" I ask, pulling my hands from my face. Her chubby little finger's pointed behind me.
