She leapt out of the window and escaped into the night, her first instinct to put as much distance between herself and the house as possible.

In the chaos, she didn't even notice the paper slipping from her grasp. It was only when she realized she had lost the address, her only link to home, that she decided to head to the police station. But she had no idea where she was or where she was going.

As she wandered helplessly, she couldn't help but think, "Why is living so painful, and dying so easy?" She had seen things that had left her feeling dead inside. The memories haunted her, and the pain seemed unbearable.

Lost and alone, she stumbled through the darkness, her heart heavy with despair. The city streets seemed to stretch on forever, a cold and unforgiving landscape.

She felt tiny and insignificant, just another forgotten soul adrift in the world. After walking for what felt like an eternity, she finally collapsed onto the sidewalk, overcome with emotion. Tears streamed down her face as she sat there, vulnerable and alone. Suddenly, a young boy appeared before her, his curious eyes sparkling with concern.

"What's wrong? Why are you crying?" he asked, his voice gentle.

She lifted her gaze to meet his, and her heart skipped a beat. The boy was no more than seven years old, with a mop of messy dark licorice hair and a smile that could light up the darkest of rooms.

"Where is the police station?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I live nearby," he replied. "I can take you there."

She hesitated, unsure if she should trust this stranger. But there was something about his kind eyes that put her at ease. She nodded, and he took her hand, leading her through the winding streets.

As they walked, he chattered excitedly about his home and family, but she remained silent, her mind consumed by her own thoughts. She just wanted to get home, to find solace in the familiar.

Finally, they arrived at the police station. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. The boy watched as she stepped inside, his eyes shining with a mix of concern and hope.

Moments later, she emerged with a police officer, the boy still waiting patiently outside.

His eyes lit up with a warm smile as he waved goodbye, his small hands clasped together in a gesture of farewell.

"We'll meet again soon," he called out, his voice carrying on the wind. "I'll wait for you."

She turned, her heart swelling with gratitude, and smiled back at him. And in that moment, something shifted inside her. She felt a glimmer of hope, a sense that maybe, just maybe, everything would be okay.
