The days passed, filled with stakeouts, more interrogations, and frustratingly dead-end leads. Zhang Hao had a habit of falling asleep during the long hours, slumping into his seat, completely unfazed, while Hanbin stewed, grinding his teeth at the sight of Zhang Hao’s calm demeanor.
One night, after hours of watching a suspect’s house, Zhang Hao jolted awake to find Hanbin still sitting upright, staring ahead, lost in thought.
"Still here, Hanbin? I didn’t think you had it in you to keep up," Zhang Hao teased, brushing a hand through his mussed hair.
Hanbin finally looked at him, his face tired but determined. "I care about this job, Zhang Hao. Maybe you could do with taking it seriously."
"Believe me, I take it very seriously," Zhang Hao replied, his gaze steady, his voice quieter than usual. There was something softer there, something in his eyes Hanbin hadn’t seen before. He found himself holding Zhang Hao’s gaze a beat too long before finally turning back to the house.
Zhang Hao chuckled softly to himself, the sound lingering in the small space of the car. For the first time, it was disarming rather than irritating.
