It was one of those rare days when Tay found himself alone after school. Most of his classmates had been picked up by their parents, but Tay’s father was always busy with work. Tay often found himself waiting, staring at the school gates, hoping he’d see his father’s car, even if he knew it was unlikely.

Tay, still just a boy, sat on a small bench by the playground, watching other kids with their parents. He tried not to feel jealous, but the empty ache in his chest grew stronger each time he saw another mom or dad hugging their child.

New: “Tay! There you are!”

Tay looked up to see New running toward him, his face beaming with excitement. New had spotted Tay waiting alone and had convinced his mom to let him stay with him. Without hesitation, New sat down beside him, clutching his backpack tightly.

Tay: “New, you didn’t have to wait with me…”

New shrugged. “Why not? We’re friends, right? Besides, it’s boring at home without you.”

Tay looked away, trying to keep his voice steady. “It’s just…you’re lucky. You have a mom and a dad. You have…someone.”

New tilted his head, confusion crossing his face. “You have someone too. Your dad, right?”

Tay gave a sad smile. “Yeah, but he’s always busy. Sometimes, it feels like he barely even knows me.”

New was quiet for a moment, then reached out and took Tay’s hand, his small fingers squeezing in comfort. “Well, you have me. And my mom says that makes you part of our family too. So…you’re not alone, okay?”

Tay looked at New, the weight in his chest lightening slightly. “You really mean that?”

New nodded eagerly. “Of course! My mom even said you could come over for dinner whenever you want. She likes having you around.”

At that moment, Tay felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time—a sense of belonging. Even though he knew his father loved him in his own way, he’d never felt truly understood. But New and his mom had a way of making him feel like he was home.

Just then, New’s mom arrived, waving to them with a warm smile. She walked over and gently patted Tay’s shoulder.

New’s Mom: “Tay, dear, I made extra dinner tonight. Why don’t you come home with us?”

Tay’s face lit up. “Really? Are you sure?”

New’s mom chuckled. “Of course, sweetheart. You’re always welcome in our home.”

That evening, as they sat around New’s family table, laughing and sharing stories, Tay felt like he was part of something special. The ache in his heart faded, replaced by a warmth that he’d carry with him for years to come.

Even though his father’s world was full of luxury, it was here—at New’s family table, surrounded by warmth and kindness—that Tay found a piece of the family he’d always longed for.
