Rule #2 - Keep a Low Profile

Blending in is an art form, and it’s one I’ve tried to master. High school isn’t exactly known for its respect for individuality, and Rule #2 is all about staying invisible. But today? Today was not my day.

It started in homeroom, when Ms. Grady decided to assign seating. Not just any seating—alphabetical. Which landed me smack in the middle of "Center of Attention" territory. Right between Madison, who thinks everyone cares about her TikTok account, and Troy, who’s apparently been “on a spiritual journey” since last Tuesday.

Ms. Grady gave us a painfully fake smile. “Now, everyone, I’d like you to partner up with your seat neighbor for today’s assignment. It’s time to make a personal connection!”

I looked around desperately, but escape was futile. Madison had already turned to me, her phone out and ready to document her new “BFF.”

“So, Felicita,” she said, aiming her phone at my face, “say hi to my followers!”

I flashed a tight-lipped smile, mentally cataloging the number of ways this could ruin my day.

“Hey, what’s up,” I mumbled, trying to shrink into my seat. It was too late. Madison’s followers had seen me. I was now tagged in a video titled “The Girl Who Hates Fun.”

By lunch, everyone knew my name, thanks to Madison’s 300K followers. So much for keeping a low profile.

Rule #2: Broken.
