Chapter 4: Brothers Bound by Pain
The sun had set behind the hills, casting long shadows across the small garden where Saad and Aditya often played. The laughter of children echoed through the neighborhood, but tonight, the air was heavy with a different kind of silence. It was a silence that spoke of unspoken grief, of heavy hearts trying to find solace in each other’s company.
Saad, who had always been outgoing and full of energy, looked across at Aditya, who was seated on the swings, staring blankly at the ground. He could see the shadows of sorrow in his brother’s eyes, shadows that loomed larger as each day passed. The two boys had grown close since the tragedy, but Aditya’s struggles often felt like a barrier, a wall he couldn’t quite scale.
“Hey, want to play a game?” Saad asked, trying to inject some enthusiasm into the evening. “We could ride our bikes down the street. I bet I can beat you to the corner!”
Aditya turned his gaze towards Saad, his expression softening for a moment. “Maybe later,” he murmured, his voice barely audible.
Saad’s heart sank at the reply. He felt helpless, knowing how much his brother had lost and wishing he could find a way to reach him. “You know, we could be the fastest bike riders ever!” Saad continued, determined to pull Aditya out of his shell. “Just like superheroes!”
Aditya managed a small smile, a fleeting moment that made Saad’s heart swell with hope. “Superheroes?” he echoed, the word igniting a spark of interest.
“Yeah! Remember that comic book we read? The one where they ride through the city, saving people?” Saad urged, his eyes brightening at the thought. “We can make our own story! We just need to think of names!”
Aditya's smile widened slightly as he thought about it. “I want to be… the Shadow Rider!”
“That’s awesome!” Saad grinned. “I’ll be Lightning Bolt! Together, we’ll defeat all the bad guys!”
Their shared laughter began to cut through the heavy air, and for a brief moment, it felt like the weight of their loss had lessened. They raced to the bikes, pedaling down the quiet street, exhilaration coursing through their veins as they competed, the world around them blurring into a backdrop of colors.
As they reached the corner, Saad glanced back to see Aditya trailing slightly behind. The boy’s brow was furrowed, his usual lightness shadowed by something deeper. Saad slowed his bike, waiting for Aditya to catch up, concern creeping back into his heart.
“Hey, you okay?” Saad asked, genuinely worried.
Aditya stopped, staring at his brother, and for the first time, his eyes shone with a hint of vulnerability. “Sometimes, I just… miss them. You know?”
Saad nodded, his heart aching. “I miss them too. But we can still make them proud, right?”
Aditya’s gaze fell to the ground, his voice cracking. “I just feel so… angry sometimes. Like I want to scream at the world for taking them away.”
“Me too,” Saad admitted, the honesty hanging in the air between them. “But we can do this together, Adi. We can help each other.”
In that moment, something shifted between them. They were no longer just friends or brothers—they were allies, bound by the pain of their loss. Aditya, who had always felt isolated in his grief, realized that Saad understood him in a way no one else could.
