Phuwin stood at the edge of the party, feeling like a ghost among the living. The noise of laughter and music surrounded him, but it felt distant, muffled by the chaos in his mind. He scanned the room, searching for Mya, hoping to find a familiar face that would ground him amid the whirlwind of emotions.

After what felt like an eternity, he spotted her near the punch bowl, laughing with a group of friends. She was radiant, her eyes sparkling as she shared a joke. Phuwin felt a pang of longing, the desire to be a part of that world tugging at him. He wanted to join them, to let go of the fear that had shackled him for so long.

But his thoughts immediately returned to Pond. The offer loomed over him like a dark cloud, casting a shadow on everything he felt. He took a deep breath, steeling himself, and made his way across the room.

“Mya!” he called out, his voice barely audible over the music. She turned, her face lighting up when she saw him.

“Phuwin! You made it!” she exclaimed, her enthusiasm infectious. “Come on, join us!”

As he approached, the laughter and chatter faded slightly, and the group turned their attention to him. Phuwin felt the warmth of Mya’s smile, but he also sensed the weight of the choice he faced. He wanted to share his thoughts with her, but how could he explain the darkness that had crept into his life?

“Hey, are you okay?” Mya asked, her brow furrowing with concern. “You look a little… off.”

Phuwin hesitated, unsure of how to respond. “I’m fine. Just… thinking,” he finally said, hoping to deflect her concern.

“Thinking? About what?” she pressed, her curiosity piqued.

He forced a smile, trying to mask the turmoil within him. “Just school stuff. You know how it is.”

Mya didn’t seem convinced but let it go for the moment. “Well, don’t just stand there. Come dance with us!” She grabbed his hand, pulling him into the circle of friends. The music thumped in his chest, and for a brief moment, he let himself be swept away in the rhythm, allowing the worries to fade.

As he danced, Phuwin felt alive, the energy of the crowd washing over him. He caught Mya’s eye, and for a fleeting second, everything felt right. But as the beat dropped and the tempo picked up, the shadow of Pond’s offer loomed larger in his mind.

“What’s wrong, Phuwin?” Mya asked again, her voice breaking through his thoughts as they took a break on the sidelines. “You’re acting really strange tonight.”

“Nothing, really,” he replied, but the tightness in his chest betrayed him. “Just… a lot on my mind.”

“Talk to me,” Mya insisted, her eyes searching his. “You know I’m here for you, right? Whatever it is, you don’t have to go through it alone.”

Phuwin opened his mouth to speak but closed it again, the words tangled in his throat. How could he explain his struggle with the darkness that Pond represented? How could he share the weight of a decision that could change everything?

Before he could respond, the room was suddenly filled with a loud crash. Glass shattered, and the music faltered as everyone turned to see a group of rowdy boys pushing their way through the crowd. They were laughing, shoving each other, clearly intoxicated and out of control. Phuwin’s heart raced as he recognized one of them—Talon, a boy from school who was known for his aggression.

“Look who we have here!” Talon shouted, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he spotted Phuwin. “The little shadow thinks he can just waltz into our party?”

Laughter erupted from Talon’s friends, and Phuwin felt the heat rush to his face. He hated this, hated being the target of their mockery. Mya stepped closer to him, her protective instincts kicking in.
