I blinked awake to soft light filtering through sheer curtains, casting gentle shadows across the room. Confusion washed over me as I took in my surroundings. This wasn't my apartment; the decor was too refined, the colors too muted. I was nestled in a large, plush bed with crisp white sheets that smelled faintly of linen and something distinctly masculine.
Panic flickered in my chest as I pushed myself up, my head spinning slightly. "Where the fuck am I?" I murmured, rubbing my temples, trying to shake off the lingering fog of unconsciousness.
The room was expansive, with high ceilings adorned with intricate moldings and columns reminiscent of ancient Greece. Marble statues dotted the space, their forms illuminated by soft golden light that seemed to pour in from a grand window overlooking breathtaking mountain views. This was no ordinary place; it was a palace, an ethereal beauty carved from the very essence of history.
"Adrian?" I called out, my voice wavering slightly in the silence. No response. Just the distant whisper of wind against the mountainside. I strained to listen, but the room felt empty, almost too still.
With every step I took, the reality of the situation hit me harder. I could barely remember the events that led me here. Adrian had been there, right in front of me, protecting me like a shield against the chaos. But now? Now he was gone, leaving me in this lavish prison or sanctuary—whichever it was.
I stood, heart racing, and took a few cautious steps toward the door, glancing around for any sign of him. The walls were adorned with striking frescoes depicting ancient battles and celestial scenes, their colors vivid and enchanting, but they offered little comfort as the anxiety built inside me. What if he didn't want me here? What if this was all some elaborate trap?
I pushed open the door, expecting it to lead me into a hallway or another room, but instead, I found myself staring at an enormous space. The high ceilings and large glass panels gave the area an airy feel, but it was the breathtaking view that caught my breath—a view that made me feel like I was standing on top of the world.
Still, the emptiness gnawed at me. I took a deep breath, trying to quell the unease bubbling in my stomach. I needed to find out where I was and, more importantly, where he was.
"Adrian!" I shouted, my voice echoing through the space. The silence that followed was deafening.
I cautiously stepped further into the room, each footfall echoing on the polished floor, my heart pounding in rhythm with my pulse. This place was unfamiliar, almost ethereal, but it felt too quiet for my liking.
Suddenly, a sound caught my attention—a faint clattering from somewhere off to my right. I turned, adrenaline rushing through me, ready for anything, but all I found was another expansive room filled with plush sofas and a sleek coffee table.
"Great. Just great," I muttered to myself, frustration creeping in. "You wake up in a mysterious place, and your 'protector' is nowhere to be found."
Just as I was about to venture further, the door swung open, and I whipped around, half-expecting Adrian to stride in. Instead, a tall, striking woman entered, her presence commanding. She had long, flowing hair, a breastplate made of gold and silver lining, and underneath she wore a white Greek dress. Her eyes were sharp yet kind.
"Ah, you're awake," she said, a knowing smile on her lips. "I'm Athena. Ares will be back shortly."
"Athena?" I echoed, trying to mask the surprise in my voice. "As in... the Athena? And Ares, wait, Adrian is Ares, like the god of war?"
Her smile widened slightly, and she nodded. "Yes, but let's not get into all of that just yet. You're safe here, Aurora."
I glanced around, still processing my surroundings. "Safe? This feels more like a fortress than a safe house."
