With Elena it had always been... challenging. Sure in retrospect, that's usually a good thing. However, it became too much of a challenge. Damon was always wondering if the next thing he did would be the thing that drove Elena away completely. Which is ironic considering he also felt as though no matter what he did, she'd always find someway to defend him, love him, stay with him, yet also judge him in this passive-aggressive way that bothered him to no end. She couldn't make him change, no one could ever make him change and although he had told her this, all she did was continue trying to convince him she loved him. As if her loving him was supposed to be some magical fix all for everything. As if the entire world - no universe revolved around the idea that whoever loves Elena should automatically be with her if she loves them. But Damon was smart enough to know that isn't how it works. Loving someone doesn't make it right if they are wrong for you.
Elena could've given any reason in the world, any possible stance on the fact that Damon wasn't good for her, but as always she chose to make it about her.
It was okay that he wasn't good for her, because she loved him.
It was okay that he murdered people, because she loved him.
It was okay that he stole her from Stefan, because she loved him. What kind of excuse even was that?
He thought to himself as he walked down the asphalt road in the pitch black of night, only a few street lights lighting up along the way.
Every move he made, good or bad, was to save her. He knew she would always forgive him, because he knew that she knew all he wanted to do was save her. In a way, that's one of the most obsessive things he could ever think of. She expected him to do what was right, but also expected him to always save her. In the end, or - was it really the end? He didn't know... He had chose to save Bonnie, leaving Elena to sit forever 23 in a coffin until Bonnie died.
Despite Elena's showing of how happy she was and how much she understood that he saved Bonnie. Damon knew that Elena wasn't happy because he saved Bonnie. She was only happy because she thought Damon saved Bonnie because he wanted to do whatever she would want him to do.
He could've let Bonnie die, and she still would've understood. Because whether he saves her, or does something else. It's always about Elena.
3 months, it had been, 3 months since the entire thing happened. The remaining witchpires had fled, and Damon had lost his distraction from reality.
He'd stopped holding the regret of saving Bonnie inside, a few weeks before. Wrecking his room with smashed bottles and not even bothering to care what Stefan had to say. Now, he was heading straight to the person he had the most to say to. Completely sober, if you can believe that.
He approached the front of the house that had once belonged to Bonnie father, he knew Bonnie would be there, sitting right on the front steps where she usually was...
Her eyes slightly surprised as she turned her head, looking forward at him.
"What are you doing here?" She asked, brushing a lock of brown hair behind her ear.
"I don't know, I guess I just needed to see you." Damon shoved his hands in his jean pockets as he leaned against the railing of the porch. This of course was a lie, and he knew she'd see right through it.
"People don't usually come to see me unless they need something." She gave him the side eye.
"Well, I thought we bonded."
"We did, months ago." Bonnie responded.
Damon smirked just a little as he spoke, "Then Elena got sleeping beautied, and I saved you.. More bonding!"
