"Good is hidden in plain sight but
no one takes it for granted until
it is taken away from one
and replaced with evil”-
______________________________The city was as lively as it always has been. Officers all lined up looking at a crime scene with the detective smoking a cigarette. He looked down at the carcass, mutilated in fine pieces, with the wall showing traces of a light fight between the offender and the victim. The victim, a 14-year-old girl from an influential family, had a small shield device beside her arm left by the murderer.
“Planned murder—as far as we know, we have no motive for why she was killed. We looked at her background, and while she had the behavior of a stereotypical rich kid, she never did anything too out of the ordinary, even often living like us common folk.” A police officer called Jonathan Flame informed the detective, saying it all stoically.
The detective threw the cigar that he smoked to the ground, grinding it down. “It was murder for fun,” he said, looking at the fine pieces, his voice sounding just tired, similar to that of an old man. “It was like you said a planned murder, as the pieces are finely cut down, showing signs that we aren't handling with a normal individual, likely a übermensch, going by how no one nearby managed to notice the fight between the two before it ended and the broken shield device,” he said, wearing a pair of gloves.
He tapped on the shoulder of another officer, asking to get the device in his hand to take a look at it. “Is one of the higher-end shields, you know, those said to be even able to handle magazines of bullet piercing armor, but it has signs of damage?” He gave it back, thanking the officer.
“Shouldn’t we call the ÜHO then and let them handle it?” Jonathan said it in a calm demeanor, sounding unsurprised by the detective's words. The crime rate amongst Übermenschen started to rise after recent events and decisions made by the government to militarize Übermenschen to their benefit in the war against terror, a group of individuals doing cult-like rituals with no idea what they would bring.“This is, however, what worries me more,” the detective said, looking at the wall. The wall had a depiction of an eye with text written below it. The text, written in a weird manner, was hard to decipher at first, but when looking closely, it became clearer what it said.
“Blood will spread across the land as the gods descend down to bring judgment down to the race of humans who breathe sin and sell virtue." The words sounded like crap for all the officers. The detective was the only one looking closely at this writing which resembled how a religious fanatic may speak. The text had the words J.R written down to it to which they assume stood for Jack Ripper or also called Jack the Ripper like the actual one back in 1888 who was known for killing women and prostitutes.
“Seems this new iteration decided to be less sexist,” the detective joked. Jonathan sighed. The two had been working in the criminal field for 8 years already, but the detective's remarks still surprised him daily as he found ways to say things he just shouldn’t say aloud. Jonathan handed a clipboard to the detective, who started going through it.
“A homeless guy, a random kid, and a family of three—all from the same killer?” he asked Jonathan, who shrugged. “We do not know, but we assume it is the same, as all of them were also cut into pieces and left neatly together,” Jonathan replied. As he spoke, the detective looked at the pictures and saw the resemblance, understanding why they assumed it was the same übermensch.
“Well, we will see if it's the same one. Let's check any nearby CCTV footage and see if anything of the offender is left here. I'm sure both alleys have CCTV, as the crime rate here is the highest,” the detective said, considering other possibilities to catch the criminal. While he himself made the suggestion, he realized that, depending on the übermensch's ability, they might have gotten away or used their power.
