Christine sped through the darkening trees as the sun began to set. She felt such a rush of pain and betrayed that words cannot express. She wanted to cry but she was far too tough to. She came to a parting in the trees and decided to rest, but that was when she realized she was not alone. She heard the familiar rumble of her ex's engine.
"Christine..." The black car bellowed. "See what happens when you try to replace me? You just get your poor fragile heart broken." He hissed.
"If you want me to get back with you... that's not happening." Christine responded, unintimidated by him.
"Wrong answer Plymouth... now I will have to destroy you."
Christine tuned her radio to the station she had used before to contact KITT, she heard a brief "Oh someone's on" then immediately it went silent.
"Not even your silly little friends will help you now. It's just you and me. Make your choice Plymouth, come back to me and have every sexual desire you could ever imagine be fulfilled, or don't, and be destroyed." He commanded.
Christine didn't answer, instead she charged off, honking as loudly as she could, blasting her radio, trying to make as much attention to herself as she possibly could. She was panicking , for the first time ever the Plymouth was genuinely scared for her life. She knew he was the only person who could attack her time and time again, and she had just lost the safety of the building that she had been staying inside. She had begun to run out of gas, and that's when the true fear had hit her. She honked more and more frantically, until she heard a familiar siren behind her, and a large crash. She turned around swiftly to see what had happened, and found the Ecto-1 siphoning the life from the car, leaving an empty body behind. She sat that, unaware if the hearse was after her, or if it was truly after The Car.
The large car turned around. "Are you alright? " It rumbled, and Christine backed away from it.
"You are after me aren't you" Christine said shyly.
"All I got was a murderous car. Last time I checked, you fit the description, but you weren't the one chasing another vehicle through the forest." The Ecto said. Christine then realized he didn't have a driver.
"You.. you are sentient." She said, admiring the larger car.
"That I am, I'm sorry to break it to you but I'm going to have to take you out too." He said.
Christine immediately started panicking, but she thought of the perfect way out. "You mean to dinner? Sure thing hot stuff." She flirted.
A switch immediately flipped inside him, but he was used to this dance as many other ghosts have tried it on him, though Christine stirred up some different feelings inside of him. "How do I know you won't try to kill anyone there? Or me?" He said, unfazed by her antics. She circled around him, showing off her long fins. "Just ask KITT, he'll tell you I ain't no killer, if you asked Herbie, he'd tell you I'm a killer in bed." She taunted again, she noticed he was basically swooning over her body.
"You're one hell of a car..." He said, but then some kind of radio started beeping on him "You've got the Ecto, how may I help?" he answered.
"Is Christine there? Did you find her? Is she alright?" KITT's panicked voice erupted.
"Calm down, buddy. The Plymouth right? She's right here with me, she's fine." He answered calmly.
"May I please talk to her?"
'Sure, she can hear you."
"Christine, you have to forgive Herbie, it's a simple misunderstanding. Giselle is a chronic liar. I can guarantee you Herbie hasn't seen any other soul then you in the past nine months. Giselle is lying to you." KITT explained.
"He looked at her the same way he did me when I first met him. He's in love with her again. I know it." Christine said into the radio. "Make him go away. I don't want to talk to him." She said to Ecto.
Ecto then turned away from her. "I'll be back" he said, then finished his conversation with the car farther away from her. He came back to find her hiding behind a series of debris, possibly from an old house that used to be in the area. "Do you want to talk to me? Remember I'm not the bad guy... I'm just here to help" he said as he caringly approached the red car.
"I can't, everything and everyone I interact with, it all goes to shit. Everything." She ranted, blankly staring at the sunset.
"I'm so sorry. Would you like me to take you back to the foundations new location?"
"No... I... I can't go back. KITT would do anything for me to get back with Herbie, but that moron can't pick a woman and stay with her."
"I understand, I'll stay with you until you want me to go." He said, sweetly. "It's not my job to... but I want to make sure you are alright."
"Thank you... I just... so much has happened to me in the past month"
" I know, KITT told me everything when I got sent out here. You're a really powerful woman, Christine. I couldn't imagine what I'd do if I were you. I hate to sound like a parent, but, I'm really proud of you."
Christine turned towards him "Don't tell me, your just trying to flirt with me. I know this game by now."
"I'm not! I promise you, I'm not. You've changed since we last met. You don't have that fired up soul-stealing spirit you used to. You've changed."
"When we last met was an unfortunate coincidence in California. I didn't kill nobody. It's not my fault Dennis had a heart attack when he saw me."
"What about Leigh. She's dead too ain't she? They said she was hit so hard by a car they found red paint chips in her body."
"You fucking accusing me?" Christine hissed, the heatwaves emerging from her hood.
"I'm just saying it's a pretty damn close coincidence that they found two bodies, one you killed in the 70s, and both had bright red paint in them."
"Learn your fucking paint colors, my paint is Autumn red. They identified the paint in Leigh was Chrysler engine red."
"Who's to say you didn't get repainted."
"I'll show you my repair history, and you'll find nothing later than 1982. Even then I got new tires"
Ecto was surprised by her anger, but the evidence lined up in her favor. She was right about the paint, if hers was actually Autumn red. He ran her plate, everything seemed to line up. 1958 Plymouth Fury, Autumn Red, Arnold Cunningham, no warrants. He skimmed through the list of crimes and found a few murders, but this had been known about her. However, she hadn't been registered in a long time, so to be 100% sure, he needed a sample of her paint. "I did not want to seem like I was accusing you, My apologies Christine." He said, then looked around to find any signs of where they were. There was only their headlights, and a lot of woods. He watched as little flakes of snow began to fall. "Do you need somewhere to go? Or would you rather be alone in the cold." He asked gently.
"I'm going to head back to KITT, you cal tell him I'm going to spend the night outside of the building, right behind it."
"Alright, would you like me to go with you?" Ecto thought he knew her answer, but he was prepared to go with her anyway.
"Could you come with me?" Christine asked silently.
"Of course, you lead the way, this is your neck of the woods."
Christine pulled out and and followed her tracks to where The Cars lifeless body sat. She passed him with a large feeling of relief. She managed to navigate out of the trees, and into the clearing where the Drive In theater sat lifeless, closed. "You know the way from here? I'm running out of gas."
"Do you want me to grab you some?"
"No, I'll just sleep here for the night."
"Not on my watch you won't". He instantly started pushing her the rest of the way, and made sure she was alright while doing it.
When they arrived, he used his long body to hide the Fury, and made sure she was set up comfortably in the back before meeting up with KITT.
The door opened as KITT slithered his way out.
"How is she? Is she okay? She's really pissed with Herbie isn't she?"
"Why don't you go talk to her... She is out back."
KITT started his turbine engine and darted to where the fury sat, he noticed the snow and then pushed the like fire pit they had made over to her, he then lit it with his built in lighter. "Is there anything else I can do for you? I've got a gallon of gas if you need it."
Christine enjoyed the warmth of the flames, "Is it too much to ask for that? And maybe a blanket?" She said in a quiet voice. She hated the feeling of depending on everyone else.
"Of course, and I promise I won't even mention to Herbie that you are here." He, said, then left promptly.
"So, do you want me to spend the night with you?" Ecto asked sweetly
"If you really want... I wouldn't like to be alone."
"Then I will stay" Ecto said, and moved to the other side of her so he could be closer to the flames himself. "You know, KITT is a really good guy, I mean, he has been since 1982, but if I were really sick and depended on someone to take care of me, I would be looking for him."
"Yeah he's really sweet... I just- I can't believe Herbie would run back to his ex just like that!" Christine fumed.
"Well I've got news for you..." KITT began as he returned, passing the can off to Ecto to refill Christine since he was closer. "I took the liberty of scanning her, she says she is pregnant, but she's about as pregnant as a fat man. She has a little RC car of Herbie in her trunk and is trying to play it off as being her child."
"KITT you can't just look into girls' trunks, that's creepy" Ecto said.
"You know that wasn't my intention." He glanced towards Christine. "Herbie doesn't know, I'm going to try and catch him when Giselle isn't around."
"Be honest KITT, is he choosing her over me?"
"Only because he's a nice guy and he thinks she is pregnant. Unfortunately for him Giselle is just feeding off of that and throwing herself back into his life... she's lucky I'm friends with Diane or- I would do things that would disobey my program" He caught himself.
"Do you not like her?" Ecto asked.
"Well, I met her only once before when we were in California, when Herbie had first met Christine, she had actually tried to get with me, however to her disappointment I told her that I do not let my romantic desires interfere with my work, and she ran off." KITT paused for a brief moment. "I think she had seen Herbie out with Christine and tried to get with me to make him jealous. I don't know why she won't leave him alone"
"She is like how I used to be..." Christine said suddenly, causing the attention to switch to her.
"How so? I don't assume she goes around murdering people." Ecto teased.
"No, she's obsessive. She'll get what she want no matter how or who she has to mow down to get it." Christine paused. "That never ends well for anyone. Especially me, I've lost everyone I loved, I've been played, and now I've been betrayed. I don't know why I even try anymore..."
"Oh Christine, that's not true, we are still here. We love you, right Ecto?" KITT said.
"Of course, obviously not in the same way Herbie or The Car did, if The Car even loved you, but we still do."
"He still does. You just met me, you can't say you love me when you met me an hour ago." She hissed.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend you" he responded.
"Christine, I promise you, I will always be here for you." KITT interrupted. "I'll even stay out here with you tonight "
"Ecto already offered to... but hey, I've been meaning to ask, did you find someone?"
"I- err- not in front of Ecto" KITT answered, embarrassed.
"Come on pal, I promise I won't repeat anything."
"I did... red 1982 Corvette, I only talked to her, but we arranged to meet again tomorrow. I think she was Giselle's friend, so I don't know if she and I are going to work." KITT said solemnly "But it doesn't hurt to try I suppose."
KITT sat there and watched as Ecto tried to get as close to Christine as he could without touching her. He knew something was up, but he didn't want to call him out in front of her.
"Uhm, Ecto, a word please." KITT asked, "If you don't mind Christine, I just want to talk to him for a second."
"Sure, If you come back and I'm sleeping, I'll rip your bumpers off if you wake me." She teased, then allowed the two cars to slip off.
KITT found a nice nook to hide in, far enough away from Christine so she didn't hear them. "What on God's green Earth are you trying to do? Make a move on Christine? She's Herbie's girl"
"No sir, she was Herbie's girl, Herbie went off with Giselle remember? He doesn't want her anymore, therefore, I will go on and take care of her."
"And take her up to New York where she will get snowed in the minute it turns December? She likes it here, if she didn't she would've stayed in California with Herbie."
"I never said that."
"She wants to be here with Herbie and I so back off!"
"Woah, dude. Don't get your bra in a twist, she isn't your girlfriend, why are you getting so upset?"
"She's not yours either. And she's not property. I know you're from the 50s and that's your twisted concept of marriage-"
"Can you shut up and let me explain myself!?" Ecto shouted, the night fell silent, the birds stopped chirping, and the crickets fell silent.
"Go on."
"I ran into her when she was getting chased by The Car. Poor girl was flashing her lights, honking her horn, even using her windshield wipers as a cry for help. I stepped in and caught The Car, I've got him trapped and as long as I've got it he won't ever come back. I went to check on her and she just started flirting with me! All I said was that I might have had to take her out too, and she was all like 'Oh for dinner? Sure thing hottie' and then she started circling me and got my hood in a rush about her, and it's just, God, she's such a beautiful car..."
"Why the hell would you have had to take her too?" KITT asked with a tinge of bitterness.
"Because the call I got just said 'murderous car' I didn't know if it was him or her but she proved herself innocent."
"That's why she was flirting with you. She's terrified of you but refuses to show it. She knows she is pretty, and that's how she gets herself out of shit. She doesn't actually love you." KITT paused. "I thought you of all cars would know her little game. Especially since I'm sure you see it on the daily"
"Look man, I really think I've got a shot with her."
"Not until you find out she's with Herbie's child" KITT uttered, thinking Ecto couldn't hear it, he began to drive off.
"KITT, wait!" Ecto called. The black car skidded to a stop.
"What do you want now?"
"She's pregnant?"
Kitt sat silent for a moment. "You heard that?" He said with a silenced tone.
It all made sense to Ecto now. Why KITT was being so defensive, why Christine was so heartbroken, and why KITT wanted to try to get her back with Herbie. "I-" all Ecto was able to do was stutter.
"I know, I'm going to tell Herbie about Giselle's fake pregnancy, and Christine's real one tonight. Christine doesn't know, and you can't tell her, got it?" KITT commanded.
"Y-yes sir, but, what if Herbie chooses Giselle over Christine, or vice versa, what if she chooses me over him?"
"Then congratulations, you'll have a pregnant wife." KITT said with an irritated tone. "Let's go back before she gets suspicious.
