i have very, very many feelings about sockathan.
in the beginning, jonathan views sock as nothing but a pest. just some nuisance who sucks at his job and bothers him.
sock views jonathan as, yes, the person he's supposed to kill, but he also wants to get along with him, which is why he was nervous the first day. seeing as jonathan is all really has, this is a natural reaction.
later on as their relationship develops, we see that sock begins to care about jonathan. he looks dejected and grows quiet when jonathan belittles him, and asks mephistopheles what will happen to jonathan when, or if, he succeeds. when he hears he could be fired, he appears to be extremely troubled by this. he wants to stay by jonathan's side to make sure he's okay, and because jonathan is all he has.
it's not just one sided, though, as we see jonathan grow comfortable with sock. a crucial part of their relationship development was when sock asked what he was listening to. a while back, he would have ignored sock, or replied with a snide comment or glare. now, he answers normally, and offers his headphones to sock.
it's really just more than headphones, isn't it? johnathan seems unwilling to interact with his peers, or anyone, really. he uses his headphones as a mechanism for people to leave him alone. johnathan's headphones are a shelter of sorts, that he keeps to himself and only himself.
but now, he's offering his headphones to sock, without sock even asking. he's letting sock in, and he's never let anyone else in, as far as canon goes. sock accepts and shows him something about himself that he's never shown anyone else.
sock takes off his hat. sock has never, ever taken off his hat before. he did it for johnathan. they've let each other in when they've let nobody else in. that sure is something, really, how johnathan went from ignoring sock to showing him parts of him that nobody else has seen.
of course, the empty threats from johnathan are still there. they mean nothing, though, as they're empty.
johnathan has nobody. his parents are never around, he never interacts with anybody- johnathan is all alone. then sock came along. sock was somebody, and somebody who grew to more than just somebody. he let sock in. sock was the only one.
now!! i'll casually mention that sock's first line is 'hey hot stuff, like what ya see?' to johnathan. stop being sO gay sock ugh my children.
