It's... Raining.

It's peaceful.

The rain was a good background noise to drown out the quietness as you read late into the night.

You sigh and reach up to your face to rub the sleep out of your eyes, though it is futile as you yawn, too tired to stay awake any longer.

Placing the book you were just reading on the table, you stand up from your seat on the couch and stretch.

You were just about to walk up the stairs to your son's bedroom to check if he was alright when you heard the doorbell ring.

"I-.. what?.."

You mumble, exhausted, but drag yourself to the front door as the ringing grows more intense.

You open the door just enough to peak out and see your old friend from high school, but what was she doing here?.

"Ma-.. Maria? What -" Your eyes narrow as you open the door completely. "What are you doing here?" You question utterly confused... had she not married the man you had warned her not to? Why is she back?.

Only after you completely opened the door were you able to see what she looked like her usually pale skin was deathly whiter than usual, well, if you remember it right since it's been so long since I last saw her...

[ So - So long ago.]

and her teal eyes that had once sparkled with joy now looked dead as she looked into your eyes with hers full of fear and a strange look of guilt in them.

Her once pristine and healthy blue-lavender hair had become unkempt and messy, which was much different than you last remember.

You looked at each other in silence her eyes were puffy, and she had bruises over the entirety of her face, maybe on her entire body.

Looking down, you see something unexpected there holding her hands where two little boys.

The youngest of the boys that looked two.

[The same age as your son]

The boy had navy blue eyes that shined, and if his eyes were watering, maybe they were since he looked so worried about his mother, his eyes matched well with his tanner skin.

He also had navy hair that was tousled but fluffy.

It looked messy in a tidy way for a lack of a better description.

The older boy that looked ten or maybe eleven had almost silky looking black hair that almost fell over his eyes due to the length of his hair.

He had teal eyes just like his mother, though instead of looking worried about his mother, he looked at you with a glare, almost as if he could ensure her safety by shielding her.

Though it only looked like a pout from your perspective.

Do..- Do you want to come inside?"

You ask, stepping away from the door to her, let her inside.

"Thank you. Thank you for letting me in." She says, sounding so grateful that it almost broke your heart.
