By the time our next class rolled around Eli had completely transformed into his Hawk persona, and we were all supportive of it. It took a while adjusting, but if it kept Eli from needing me to follow him around twenty four seven— I was okay with that. I mean of course I was, did I seriously think Eli and Demetri would need me for forever? We were all going to grow up eventually, I couldn't watch their backs all the way through college, this was a good thing.“Fighting positions!” We all stamped our feet out, lifting our arms. Sensei Lawrence walked through us with piercing eyes, he kicked Hawk's foot out from under him and he stumbled “Stabilize your base Hawk. Keep your balance, full rotation when you strike.”
“Yes sensei.”
Sensei Lawrence walked past another boy and jerked himself towards him, the boy flinched “Did you just flinch Virgin?” he turned to another kid, the same result “Holy shit, we got a room full of flinchers!” he stared in horror
“Yes sensei!” The room of nerds shouted, I snickered
“That was not a question!” sensei shouted. He walked up and to me came at me, I stayed still like stone. Throughout my life I had learned better than to flinch, it just egged the bullies on “Thank god. Raise your hand if you've never been punched in the face,” everyone except Miguel, Aisha and I put up their hands. Miguel gave me a look, I ignored him “Put your hands down. All your lives you've been avoiding fights, so you don't break your nose or lose a tooth, this concussion nonsense. So there's only one solution and that is before you leave this dojo each and every one of you is going to take a punch, very hard, to the face,” this is going to be ridiculous “Miss. Fitz, Mr. Diaz! Line em up, unflinch this group.”
“Yes sensei,” Miguel and I mumbled together with a bow
Sensei Lawrence headed into his office, Miguel and I turned to each other with shit eating grins. We bumped fists, each chuckling to ourselves as we turned to the rest of the group. As the head of the class Miguel got everyone in order. Two lines in front of each of us, ironically everyone seemed to be avoiding mine more than Miguel’s.
“You guys know he's got more experience right?” I snickered
“Yeah, but you're scary,” Bert, one of the youngest boys in the class, said “Miguel might take pity on us.”
“Yeah, you won't,” His buddy Nate chimed in
“You guys really think I'm gonna take it easy on you?” Miguel paced a little, I pursed my lips and laughed through my nose so I wouldn't undermine him but he was definitely having fun with it “What do we teach at Cobra Kai!”
“Strike first, strike hard, no mercy!” The class echoed back the mantra Cobra Kai stood for
“No mercy!” Miguel shouted again, his eyebrows furrowed madly “Now who's line you wanna be in?”
A moment of silence before Bert spoke up again “Sorry dude, still yours,” he cringed
Miguel deflated, I laughed as he flopped his head down onto my shoulder and I patted his back. I think Miguel started fake crying by the movement in his shoulders, he was trying to lighten the mood because everyone was about to get very, very grumpy. And they did, one by one they stepped up and they took a hit to the face, delt out my Miguel and myself. A couple people bled, some other kids fell back on their asses and crawled away. Aisha took it the best out of anyone, of course she’d been punched before.
