Nethu stood at the entrance of Peradeniya University, her heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. The grand campus spread out before her, surrounded by lush greenery and framed by the distant hills. She had arrived with her parents, but as she took in the view, a wave of realization washed over her: this was the beginning of a new chapter, one that felt both thrilling and daunting.
Walking toward the hostel with her bags in hand, Nethu felt the tightness in her chest growing. The old building loomed ahead, buzzing with life-girls laughing and chatting, doors creaking open and shut, clothes hanging from balconies. It was vibrant and full of energy, but to Nethu, it felt overwhelming, a stark contrast to the quiet, familiar comfort of her home.
As she stepped inside, a thought flashed through her mind: *Everyone here seems so confident, so sure of themselves. Will I ever fit in?* The question lingered, settling uncomfortably in her stomach.
When she entered her room on the second floor, she noticed it was simple but cozy, with four narrow beds and old wooden wardrobes squeezed into the limited space. Only one of her roommates had arrived: a pretty girl with a kind face, busy arranging her books on a small shelf.
The girl turned and smiled warmly. "Hello! You must be new. I'm Piyumi , second-year, engineering faculty."
Nethu managed a shy smile. "I'm Nethu. First-year."
Piyumi's gentle smile didn't waver. "It's nice to meet you, Nethu! If you need any help, feel free to ask!"
As they talked, Piyumi told that their two other roommates would be arriving later that day.
Nethu felt some of her nerves ease at Piyumi's kindness. She unpacked her belongings slowly, setting up her side of the room with books and little reminders of home. But when the evening came, and she sat on her bed listening to the unfamiliar sounds of hostel life-laughter from nearby rooms, the hum of distant conversations-she felt the weight of being away from home for the first time. It wasn't just a room; it was the first place she'd sleep without her parents nearby, and the emptiness felt heavier than she had imagined.
Still, she drew in a deep breath, willing herself to be strong. This was her new reality, and despite the nervousness, she couldn't help but feel a spark of hope for what lay ahead. *If only I could find the courage to reach out, to connect with others,* she thought, wondering if this could be the start of something beautiful, or if her fears would hold her back.

Nethu awoke to the soft light filtering through the curtains of her hostel room. It was her first day of lectures and a mix of excitement and anxiety bubbled within her. She quickly got ready, her hands slightly trembling as she dressed.
"Good morning, Nethu!" Piyumi greeted her cheerfully as Nethu stepped into the common area. Piyumi was already dressed in a vibrant outfit, her hair perfectly styled. "Are you ready for your first day?"
Nethu nodded, trying to suppress her nerves. "I think so," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Don't worry! You'll do great. Just remember to breathe!" Piyumi encouraged with a reassuring smile, her confidence infectious.
With that, Nethu took a deep breath and headed out, clutching her bag tightly as she made her way through the sprawling grounds of University. The campus was breathtaking, nestled among lush hills and ancient trees that whispered in the breeze. The Faculty of Engineering loomed ahead, a cluster of stately buildings where the brightest minds came together. For Nethu, just being here felt surreal and intimidating all at once.
Adjusting her glasses, she walked toward the massive lecture hall for her first Structural Analysis class. She kept her head down, weaving through groups of students who already seemed to know each other. Being introverted never helped in moments like these, and her stomach twisted with nerves. But she had to focus-she had worked so hard to get here.
Taking a deep breath, she chose a seat near the middle, not too close to the front but not hidden in the back either. She had barely settled in when a cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Hi there! Is this seat taken?"
Nethu glanced up to see a girl with bright eyes and a warm smile standing beside her. The girl was strikingly pretty, with a simple charm that made her seem approachable despite her good looks. She wore a light blue frock, her hair tied back in a loose braid.
"Uh, no, it's free," Nethu replied, surprised that someone had chosen to speak to her.
The girl set down her books and offered her hand. "I'm Dinethi . Nice to meet you!"
Nethu hesitated for only a second before shaking Dinethi's hand. "I'm Nethu .Nice to meet you too.." she said, her voice quieter than she'd have liked. Dinethi's smile widened.
"Great! Looks like we'll be struggling through Structural Analysis together," Dinethi joked. Nethu felt a small smile tug at her own lips. Dinethi's kindness felt genuine, a welcome relief from the intimidating sea of new faces.
As more students trickled in, the lecture hall filled with an excited buzz. Nethu's heart raced when she saw him. He walked in carrying a stack of papers, his crisp shirt rolled up at the sleeves, his tall frame commanding attention. At twenty-seven, he wasn't much older than the students he taught, but he had a confidence that made everyone sit up and listen.
"Wow," Dinethi whispered, leaning toward Nethu. "Is it just me, or is he even more handsome in person?"
Nethu's cheeks flushed. "Yeah... he's kind of popular," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. More than popular, she thought. He's perfect. But she kept that to herself, feeling silly for even thinking it.
Vihanga's voice was calm yet captivating as he began the lecture, simplifying complex concepts with ease. Nethu tried to focus, but she couldn't stop herself from glancing at him. Her heart ached with an impossible hope she had no right to feel.
When the lecture ended, Dinethi turned to Nethu, eyes sparkling with excitement. "Want to walk back to the hostel together?" she asked. Nethu hesitated for a split second before nodding. She had never made friends easily, but Dinethi's warmth made her want to try.
"Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is be yourself in a world that tries to make you someone else."
