Betrayal

Long, pristine white curtains swayed gently in the cool air, partially revealing the man standing on the large balcony overlooking the calm sea. Liam Hemsworth paced back and forth, occasionally stopping to ruffle his long, dark brown hair. His brows furrowed deeply in worry. He had not seen his wife since she left for work yesterday morning. It was not unusual for Elizabeth to spend a few days in her office; she was the CEO of the Liz Beauty Corporation after all, and Liam understood that. What was unusual was her radio silence. Her direct calls went unanswered, and so did the company line. It got Liam worried. Did she perhaps fly out of the country and forget to mention it? His heart hammered rapidly against his chest as he recalled the morning news about rampant abductions of influential persons in the corporate world.

“Let me call her again.” His deep voice rumbled as he fished into his pockets for his mobile. He listened attentively to the receiver as the phone rang, biting his lower lip in anticipation.

“Maybe something has happened to her. I better go check in her office.” He muttered as he hurried down the fleet of grand staircases skillfully built in the middle of the elegant mansion.  His half buttoned, long sleeved shirt flapped loosely as he took the stairs two at a time.

His driver walked briskly to the waiting Jeep once he spotted Liam. “Good afternoon, sir?” He greeted Liam as he opened the door.

“Good afternoon, Jerry. Take me to the company; please hurry.” Liam pushed sunglasses above his nose and perched himself on the black leather seat.

Traffic was scarce, which made the drive to the company smooth. Liam jumped off the Jeep barely before the driver could pack. He raced into the tall towering glass building, barely hearing the pleasantries from the employees who knew him as the boss's wife. He took the staircase quickly, his heart thumping and little beads of sweat trickling down his temple as he got to the tenth floor, just in time to hear the chime of an elevator. A heavy sigh of relief escaped his lips as he got into the elevator, quickly pushing for the fifty-first floor.

When the elevator chimed for the final time, Liam was already waiting to move. “Hi Lisa, is Elizabeth in?” He greeted Elizabeth's secretary as he walked by her office.

"Yes, Mr. Liam, but he doesn't want to be disturbed.” Lisa's voice rang through the grand office timidly; she pushed the huge glasses above her slender nose as she followed Liam in hot pursuit.

When Liam pushed Elizabeth's door open, he stood frozen, feeling stupid for worrying about her.

At the far end of the elegant office, Elizabeth sat swinging comfortably in her chair. She was on another call with someone else. When she saw Liam, she lifted her finger, signaling him to wait a second. “I'm going to have to call you back.” She said confidently. She stood up and rounded the table after placing the receiver down.

“Liam, what are you doing here?” She regarded him keenly. “It's okay, Lisa; you may go.” She turned her attention to Lisa.

“Liz, I'm here because I was worried about you." A hint of pain flushed across Liam's expression as he closed the small space between her and Elizabeth. “You didn't come home last night. Are you okay?”  He took Elizabeth into his arms, embracing her in a warm hug.

“Liam.” Elizabeth pried Liam off, taking a small step back. “I'm working.” Her voice was laced with slight irritation.

“I know, but why didn't you call to assure me you are okay?” Liam's face was etched in sadness.

“Yeah. Everything is fine.” Liz held Liam's hand, squeezing gently. “It's just that I'm busy, with the financial year coming to a close. I may even go on another trip to close some business deals.” She turned around facing the window, glancing at her wristwatch from time to time. Her long legs revealed through the front slit of her long, fitting black dress.

“Again?” Liam's tone trailed off as he took a step beside Liz at the window. “What happened to taking a break?”

“Liam, I am the CEO of a company; I can't just take off when I want to; people need me here.” Liz's focus was trained on the buzz of activities 50 floors down. Her deep brown eyes darted on people crossing the street. Her gaze was especially set on a dark blue Land Cruiser a little further from the road. She tapped her fingers restlessly on her elbows. “Look, I won't come home tonight, but how about tomorrow? We take a three day trip. You can go work on your music tonight and play me something nice tomorrow; what do you say?” She leaned forward, giving him a quick peck on the lips.

“Alright.” Liam gave in, his shoulders slumped defeatedly, as he sank on the huge soft couch. “It's just that things have been a little different since we got married. In college, we had more time for each other... It gets lonely sometimes.”  He gazed at her softly, thinking back to the first time he laid his eyes on her, at a freshmen's party. She was so carefree.

“Alright. But you really have to go now.” Elizabeth nudged Liam out of the seat, through the door. “I have to get ready for a dinner meeting; see you tomorrow; love you.”  She closed the door from the inside and went back to her earlier phone call.

Feeling beaten down. Liam took the stairs, his hands dipped into his pockets, as he recalled the long gone years. If only he could use music to capture her attention again, as he had done years ago. She loved listening to him play, always telling him he would become a famous singer one day. Their relationship was perfect, born of respect, mutual understanding, and above all, love, but the work seemed to get in between them recently since she took over the family's business and branched off on her own. He made  up his mind to win her back with the one thing she loved, music.

He walked out of the company, heading to his Jeep. “Jerry, how about we get some drinks as you help me create beautiful music for my wife?”

“Yes boss.” Jerry smiled cheekily, getting ready to start the car.

“Mr. Liam! Mr. Liam! Wait!” Lisa was jogging towards Liam, a brown envelope in hand.

“What's up, Lisa?” Liam turned around, taken aback by the panting woman.

“It's Mrs. Elizabeth; she left the papers behind; could you get them to her please?" It's this address right here.” Lisa looked desperately at Liam, fearful he would refuse.

“Has she left already?” Liam inquired curiously. Lisa nodded rapidly, wishing Liam would just take the papers already.

“Alright. If they are that important.” He turned to Jerry. ” Change of plans.”

Liam leaned back on comfortable leather seats as they drove along the coastline further from the bustling city life. “What a strange place for a meeting.” He mumbled to himself as Jerry took a turn, a dirt path lined by planted forest on either side. A magnificent beachfront villa came into view.

“Jerry, please park the car and wait for me here.” His tone was low yet calm. A sudden feeling came over him; the hairs of his standing on end suddenly.

Liam got out of the car, tentatively picking his way to the villa. A cold, sinking feeling seeped through his nerves, settling in the pits of his stomach. The thumping of his heart got louder until he could feel it in his throat. “Please no.” He whispered as he licked his chapped lips.

Right by the pool, two figures lay entangled in each other's arms. The woman lay naked on her back, her legs and arms wrapped around a large man's waist. As he moved rhythmically on top of her. When he got close enough to identify them, Liam stood frozen, the envelope in his hand falling down.

His jaw clenched in rage as he watched his childhood friend thrust himself repeatedly into his wife. Dylan's prolonged groans as he finished pierced his heart, and Elizabeth's moans felt like salt being poured on a fresh wound.

Liam's limp legs gave way, and he sank to the ground, letting out a loud growl. He startled the pair, sending them tumbling into the ice cold pool water.
