The morning dawned softly over the Realm of the Gods, casting a warm glow through the sanctuary's arched windows. Aetherion stood by the windowsill, watching as the first light touched the carefully decorated hall. Today, they were celebrating Khan's fourth birthday, a day that carried both joy and a quiet tension as Aetherion and Valoria prepared to mark this new chapter in their son's life.
Valoria entered, her arms full of small, intricately wrapped gifts, each one tied with stardust threads that shimmered in the morning light. She caught Aetherion's gaze, her eyes softening as she noticed his pensive expression.
"Is everything all right?" she asked, setting the gifts down carefully on a nearby table.
Aetherion nodded, but there was a hint of something unreadable in his eyes. "Yes, just... reflecting on how much has changed. Khan is already four, and yet, in so many ways, it feels like he's only just arrived." He glanced at her, his gaze contemplative. "He's growing faster than I anticipated—not just in years, but in power."
Valoria's face softened as she approached him, her voice gentle. "I know what you mean. Every day, he surprises us with something new—a stronger light, a deeper understanding. But he's still our Khan, full of wonder." She placed a comforting hand on his arm. "Today, let's focus on that."
Aetherion's expression eased, and he took her hand, squeezing it gently. "You're right. He deserves a day of pure joy, without any concerns shadowing it."
They moved to the center of the hall, where streamers made of stardust hung in loops from the ceiling, casting a soft glow. The walls were decorated with scenes from Khan's favorite stories, illustrated by enchanted paintings that moved gently, bringing the stories to life in soft, dreamlike movements.
Valoria adjusted one of the paintings, smiling as it shifted into an image of a fox and a dragon entwined, echoing Khan and Mugen's bond. "I want him to know how much love surrounds him," she murmured, her voice filled with quiet determination.
Aetherion nodded. "He feels it, Valoria. But with each birthday, that love becomes something he understands more deeply." He paused, his voice quieter. "Do you think he's ready for the next step?"
Valoria turned to him, her expression contemplative. "Are you asking if we should explain more about his powers?"
Aetherion hesitated, his gaze serious. "Yes. We've been careful, giving him just enough to understand the basics, but soon... he'll start asking questions about why he's different. And we should be prepared for those questions."
Valoria sighed, nodding. "I've thought about that too. But perhaps today isn't the day to introduce more complexity. He deserves one more year of pure wonder before we dive into those depths."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of small, eager footsteps approaching. Khan ran into the hall, his face beaming with excitement as he took in the decorated room. His eyes sparkled as he saw the gifts and the glowing decorations, and he rushed to his parents, wrapping his arms around both of them.
"Thank you, Mama, Daddy! It's so pretty!" he exclaimed, looking between them with pure joy.
Aetherion knelt down, pulling Khan into a warm hug. "Happy birthday, my little star. Today is all about you."
Khan laughed, clapping his hands. "Can we open the presents now? Please?"
Valoria chuckled, brushing a gentle hand over his hair. "Yes, love, but one at a time. We want to enjoy each one together."
They led him to the table, where the gifts were arranged in a small, glowing circle. Khan's excitement was palpable as he reached for the first gift, a small box wrapped in silver paper. He looked up at his parents, seeking their approval, and they nodded encouragingly.
