Chapter 1
"Cherri!" my head snapped to my bedroom door, the old dark wood showing its years of wear as it hung by a hinge. "Cherri breakfast!" my mother called again as i rubbed the sleep from my eyes
"Coming! Just give me a sec!" i called back hoping it was enough to keep her from calling again. I rushed through my room once i had stretched, grabbing a shirt from my bed and a pair of shorts from a chest on the floor. The room was barren and the only things on the walls where a few drawing on old scrap paper that had browned. The walls where chipped and in some places large holes filled the walls, it was a small room but id been fine living in it sense birth so i didn't mind,
As I rushed down the stairs I sighed when I smelled the fresh scent of bacon, a rare delicacy down in the dark.
"You found bacon?" I asked as I sat on one of the old wooden chairs. Its leg whined under my weight.
"Yes, at the market yesterday. Dale was selling it for whatever he saw fit." my mom said as she placed a plate down in front of me. Bacon and bread. A bigger meal than normal.
"What did you trade?" I asked digging in. "I sold him your sister's music box and a few plates." she whispered. I stopped eating and looked at her.
"Does Beverly know?" I asked, setting the bread down back on the plate.
"No, not yet. I plan to tell her today."
I sighed and stood up "she's gonna be mad you know." mom nodded her head. "I know." I sighed again and placed my plate on the counter next to the stove. The heat from it makes the morning chill fade for a second.
"How is she? And dad." I asked.
"Still sick. Your fathers got it worse, poor man. Been coughing all night non-stop. I put some water at the door with his plate, managed to snag a few pills too so I gave him that." she poured herself a cup of water as she spoke, "ur sister well i don't know it seems like she'll get better than it starts all over again. Slipped her a few pills too. I don;t know what it is they got but it;s stubborn and won't let em go."
I smiled a bit and hugged her from behind "you're doing your best and that's all that matters. We can only hope it'll pass soon."
She smiled and leaned her head back "i hope. I've heard a few of Mitch's kids got it too, it's working its pace faster on them. There bed ridden. Doc's don't think they're gonna make it to the end of this bonfire."
I took a shaky breath, "well i think they will, and beverly and pa. They're gonna make it. Just like you and me."
She sighed "where would i be without you cherry.."
I laughed "well without me you would probably be sick like pa, so let's keep it the way it is now." she laughed a full happy one, a rarity down here but not with her. Her cheeks blushed a bit as her soft golden hair fell from the ribbon she had in. her soft blue eyes covered by pale eyelids. "Okay cherry, enough of the sucking up."
I smiled again "yes your majesty." I laughed as she joined in.
"Cherri!" she jokingly laughed. I smiled again and let her catch her breath. "Okay, okay. I'll stop." i paused the soft silence that filled the small space was nice
"Oh cherry, I need you to grab a few things from the market today. I have to clean and do chores around here so i cant. It's only a few things and I have a bag of things I'm willing to trade. I also put a few things of food that's going bad soon in there. Just don't tell em that..anyway. The list is by the door. I love you cherri"
"Okay ma, love you too, oh and tell pa that too! And beverly!" i hurried as I put my old mud stained shoes on, quickly grabbing the bag of things and the small note from the counter by the door before sliding into the darkness of the home i live in.
