“Ms. Singhania.”
My eyes snap up to see my Sociology professor crossing his arms against his chest with an annoyed expression. All eyes fall on me as I sit up straight.
My throat dries up.
“Y-Yes?”
His jaw clenches slightly.
“Have you been paying attention?”
As much as I crave to say yes, I know it is far from the truth. In reality, I am scrolling through my phone to look up more about hybrids.
I find myself shrinking under everyone’s scrutinizing gazes while racking my brain for an appropriate answer.
“Uhh…”
“Yes or no, Ms. Singhania…” His voice lowers
“Y-Yes.” I cringe internally as the reply rolls down my tongue. My brain screams at me for answering yes, knowing quite well I was doing anything but that.
His lips curl up in a subtle smirk. Oh, shit. Now, he’s going to humiliate me in front of the class, isn’t it?
“So, tell me, Ms Singhania.” His smirk transforms into an amused smile. “What were we discussing five minutes ago?”
I gulp visibly as my mind goes blank. From the corner of my eyes, I notice a few students snickering and covering their mouths from giggling aloud.
Slightly trembling, I say the first thing that comes to my mind.
“Uhhh…power?”
The snickers stop and silence falls over us for a brief moment. Everyone’s eyes are now on the faculty who seems to be contemplating his response.
By the look on his face and the slight twitching of his eyes, I can tell he’s struggling to respond.
After what seems like forever, he responds.
“Very well. Let’s continue the lesson.” My shoulders are about to relax when he adds another comment. “And Ms. Singhania?”
I quickly respond to my name, wondering what he wants to add after accepting that I was paying attention in his class.
“You won’t get lucky every time.”
