The air was crisp and cool as Camila stepped outside, the autumn leaves crunching beneath her boots, vibrant hues of red and gold swirling around her. Today was the town's annual fall festival, a day filled with laughter, games, and the enticing aroma of seasonal treats wafting through the air. She could feel an excited buzz in her chest as she made her way to the centre of town, where colourful stalls and carnival games awaited.
As she approached the festival, the sight was a feast for the senses. Twinkling lights adorned the trees, and laughter echoed in the air, mingling with the sound of upbeat music from a nearby stage. Camila spotted her friends—Dinah, Ally, and Normani—waving from a booth filled with homemade crafts. But it was Lauren, who stood just a bit apart from the group, that caught her eye.
Lauren was laughing, her green eyes sparkling in the afternoon sun, and Camila felt a familiar warmth blossom in her chest at the sight. Today, Lauren wore a cosy flannel shirt, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, and a light jacket over it. Camila couldn't help but admire the way she seemed to glow in the autumn light, exuding a charm that made her heart race just a little faster.
"Hey!" Camila called out, making her way over to the group. As she approached, Lauren turned, a bright smile breaking across her face, and Camila felt her own lips stretch into a grin in response.
"Look who finally decided to join us!" Lauren teased, stepping closer, the slight chill of the day replaced by the warmth of their friendship.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Camila replied, her heart fluttering at the way Lauren looked at her, as if she was the only one that mattered in that moment. "What have I missed?"
"Just the best part! The pumpkin pie-eating contest!" Normani chimed in, her voice playful. "And some seriously bad karaoke. You should have been here to see it."
Camila laughed, the sound mingling with the energy of the festival. "Sounds like I'll have to catch up. What's first on the agenda?"
"Games!" Dinah shouted, bouncing on her heels with excitement. "We have to win you a prize!"
Camila felt a thrill of anticipation at that, her eyes lighting up as she glanced at the rows of booths filled with carnival games—ring tosses, balloon darts, and more. She loved the atmosphere, the sense of community, and especially the laughter shared among friends.
"Alright, let's do it!" Camila declared, and the group moved toward the nearest booth, where a bright banner read "WIN A PRIZE!" in bold letters.
As they played various games, the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything. Camila lost track of time, her laughter mingling with Lauren's as they competed against each other in a friendly way. The air was filled with playful banter and the occasional squeal of joy when someone managed to hit a target or ring a bottle.
After a few rounds, Camila found herself by Lauren's side, their arms brushing against each other as they cheered for their friends. They shared a look that lingered just a moment too long, the unspoken connection between them thickening the air around them.
"Think I can win a prize for you?" Lauren asked, her voice low and playful as they approached a dart board booth. She held the darts with a confident grip, a mischievous glint in her eye. "What do you say?"
Camila raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile forming on her lips. "You? Win a prize? I'll believe it when I see it."
"Challenge accepted," Lauren replied, determination sparking in her eyes. She stepped up to the booth, her focus intense as she took aim. Camila felt her breath hitch, a flutter of excitement washing over her as she watched Lauren throw the dart.
