Cedric couldn't help but feel a twinge of excitement as he led Elara through the bustling streets of the town. The familiar streets were transformed by her presence, each stall and shop suddenly brimming with potential for shared memories.
"So, what does your sister like?" Elara asked, her tone as light as her steps.
Cedric rubbed the back of his neck. "That's the trouble. She doesn't like jewels, fancy gowns... she'd rather be in something simple."
Elara raised an eyebrow, her smile playful. "A challenge, then. Well, we'll just have to find something that speaks to her taste. Let's see if the market has anything worth bringing back."
They strolled past colorful stalls selling everything from woven blankets to hand-painted trinkets, each vendor trying to tempt passersby. A little ways ahead, a sweet scent wafted over from a pastry stall, and Elara's attention shifted instantly, her gaze lingering on the golden, sugar-dusted pastries displayed on the counter.
"Interested?" Cedric asked with a grin.
Elara raised an eyebrow as she followed him. "They do look rather tempting."
Cedric's face lit up. "Wait here," he said, heading over and returning moments later with two warm pastries dusted in sugar. He handed one to her, looking both amused and curious. "Best in the city. Trust me."
She took a bite, and her eyes widened in appreciation. "You might be right about that, Sir Cedric," she said, brushing a crumb off her lips.
"I may not know much about gifts for my sister, but I know the best pastries in the kingdom when I see them," Cedric said, with a tinge of pride.
They wandered a bit longer, sharing stories of their childhoods. Cedric recounted the time Serene had tried to teach him archery, only for her to get distracted and accidentally send an arrow whizzing past him. Elara laughed at the image, clearly intrigued by Cedric's bond with his sister.
"She sounds wonderfully spirited," Elara said. "I can see why you're so determined to find her the perfect gift."
"She's the best—and also the most infuriating at times," Cedric admitted with a grin. "But she means the world to me. You don't have any siblings, do you?"
"No," Elara said, a small smile softening her face. "I was an only child, but my cousin and I grew up together. He's more like a brother to me."
"Seems like I will have to up my charm to come in your brother's good books," Cedric said.
"Well I believe you are doing well for a knight," Elara said, giving him a sidelong glance.
They passed a dressmaker's shop next, the windows lined with finely made gowns. One particular dress—a deep, rich emerald with intricate embroidery—caught Elara's attention. She paused, her eyes lingering on the dress with clear admiration.
"That's beautiful," she murmured, glancing at Cedric. "Do you think your sister would like it?"
Cedric considered the dress but shook his head, amused. "Serene would throw a fit if I brought home anything with even a hint of frills. She'd probably trade it for a pair of boots and ride out into the woods."
Elara smiled, glancing at the dress again. "I suppose she's one for simpler things. Sensible... unlike me, admiring frills and embroidery."
Cedric gave her a warm look, surprised at how her words made him want to spoil her a bit. "You look like you belong in it, though," he said without thinking, his voice softer than he intended. "It would suit you perfectly."
Elara's cheeks colored faintly, but she maintained her teasing smile. "Careful, Sir Cedric. You're starting to sound dangerously close to flirting."
As they left the shop, Cedric paused, glancing back at the dressmaker and making a discreet gesture. Once Elara had walked ahead, he leaned in and quietly requested that the dress be sent to the castle, adding that it was for a guest of the commander. He flashed his official crest as proof, and the shopkeeper nodded enthusiastically.
