Crown prince reader x assassin Dabi

Y/n = your name
F/n = friends name
E/C = eye color

Tonight was your 19th birthday and you had to dance with suitors for the entire night to try to find a fiance. Not your idea but there was no escaping your mother's will. Valena was a kingdom built upon arranged marriages, so there was no chance for choosing a partner out of love.

Your baby dragon sat on their vanity, curled around itself as it slept, emitting smoke rings with every snore. Walking towards the vanity to grab your mask you glanced down at it, it was elegant and detailed, with images of Greek tragedies carved into the gold details. Once You put the mask on they took a step back and looked at yourself in the mirror. A white shirt with puffy sleeves tucked into black pants that crossed your body at the waist, the boots that you wore went up past to your knees with the front of the shoe slimming into a point and a slight heel to allow the boots to be a little taller. Across your entire body were gold details, some of the gold details on the pants looked similar to architectural designs and some details looked like gold dripping from your body. To finish the look was a flowing cape that draped across your shoulders, with more gold elegantly added. Honestly, you felt like an elaborate painting on display, your (hair type) hair being pushed out of the way of the mask before adding small constellations into your hair with a touch of magic.

Taking a deep breath you stepped out of your room and walked onto the balcony that overlooked the ballroom. People in elegant dresses and suits as they danced to the music. While this was a ball to find a suitor, there were still people who came to find their own suitors within the crowd and some who just enjoyed a dance. You heard someone behind them and flinched before realizing it was their personal guard f/n, dressed in their usual uniform.

"Are you ready for tonight?"
"Do I Look like I'm ready."
"Fair point. Well you look nice if it's any help?"
"What if I don't find anyone and mother sets me up with some random person?"
"Then your suitor might befall by some strange accident," f/n says with a grin as they reach towards their sword, "Now get out there, you don't have all night."
"Fine, I'll go. Oh and you can go enjoy your night, I won't need a guard tonight."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive, go find a suitor of your own at some library or bar or whatever non royals do"

The two of you laugh for a moment before f/n leaves, leaving you alone. Sighing, You slowly descend the stairs before making a grand entrance. Everyone stared in awe at your outfit and yourself. You bow politely and then the orchestra starts up again as everyone begins to dance. A few shy women approached you asking to dance but you weren't interested. Sighing you agreed to a dance begrudgingly and listened as she talked about how she was better than her friends. Mentally you reminded yourself not to pick her as your fiance.

Once the dance was over you decided to take a break and grab some champagne, taking a sip before sighing and walking out towards the balcony, but you were intercepted by a tall man in a full face mask, showing only his eyes, a familar piercing blue. His hair was black and messy, and he looked down at you, as if inspecting you. Evening the playing field you looked him up and down, he was wearing a black suit with gold embroidery on the cuffs and lapel, with gold buttons and embellishments on the tie. He wore black gloves that looked to be silk and boots that were similar to your own.

"I'm so sorry for bumping into you, your highness, might I take this next dance as an apology?"

You paused for a moment before slowly extending their hand, Deep e/c eyes matching the mysterious man's familiar piercing blue ones.

"I'll accept this dance."
"Perfect."

He proceeded to grab your hand and pull you into a spin before grabbing your other hand and leading you into a waltz, slipping one hand to your waist. The violins seemed to rise to the occasion of this mysterious dance. He was skilled and gave you the feeling of being important just from how precise he was with his movements. As the violin's crescendo he spins you into a dip before pulling you back and dancing elegantly across the floor. All eyes were on you, but for once it seemed they wanted to be you rather than wanting to be with you. This feeling of being on fire was wonderful and you never wanted it to end. Grinning as you let him lead and allowed the music to take away your thoughts.

"Enjoying yourself?"

You look up at him with a grin, "Hoping It'll be more enjoyable than this."

"Careful what you wish for princey"

He then grabs you and spins you again allowing for the whole world to feel like it was fading away. He was smirking as he watched your face, before pulling you into a final dip and leaned in close, breathing quickly as his chest rose up and down. That was amazing.

You gave a short bow towards him before walking towards the balcony outside to get some air from that rush of excitement.

Once outside, the freezing air hit you, snow was gently falling and it was a perfect night. The moon cast a lovely light on you, as if accentuating your beauty to the world. Sighing you leaned on the balcony as you stared over the edge, the cities were alive and bustling, lights creating a beautiful scene. You could see the dragon sanctuary fire heating the houses. This was a perfect place.

You heard someone's footsteps on the balcony, turning to request silence, you see the same man you had danced with earlier, "oh its you-"

The next thing you saw was a dagger at your throat.

"Careful sweetheart, wouldn't want the knife to slip if you struggle."
"What- You-"
"Shhhh, call the guards and I'll slit your pretty little throat right here and now."
"Bastard."
"I've been called worse."

You tried to move out of his grip but failed, getting pushed into the wall.

"Listen, I was hired to kill you, but after dancing with you I'm feeling...generous. So, let's see if we can come to an agreement."

You glared, this asshole had attempted to kill you and was now asking to make a deal.

"Glad to see we have no hard feelings. Listen, pay me double what my attackers paid me and I won't kill you."

You pretend to agree, once the man sees this he loosens his grip a little, giving you the perfect moment to escape. You slide past him, changing to him being pressed into the wall and pushing the dagger towards his throat. With your other hand, you grab his mask and pull it off, freezing as you realize who had attacked you.

"...toya?"

He froze, did you really remember him? Toya and you had been childhood friends, and teenage sweethearts before his father had tried to kill him. Overworking him to the point of exhaustion, then throwing him into a fire four years ago when King Enji decided he was useless. Your final memory together played in his mind, the two of you running around in the woods, to find peace and quiet. Giggling like little school kids before softly saying "I love you".

His voice cracked as he spoke his next words, "You remember me?"

"Toya, I thought you died-"
"Toya is dead. He died the moment his father threw him into the fire."

You glanced at his scars on his face and wondered if there were scars on his whole body, which may have been why he was wearing gloves.

"I go by dabi now. I'm an assassin. Not a prince."
"Toya was my friend..." You paused before looking up, "Is dabi?"
He took a soft breath, "Yes.."
"Why didn't you tell me you survived.."
"I thought you'd be glad I was dead. Glad to be rid of me."

This made your blood go cold.
"No. I would never be glad you died."
"I'm so sorry y/n-"

He looked like he would have cried if he was able to.

"Don't apologize for living, For surviving."
"I was going to kill you-"
"Then I'm glad you didn't."

You stopped holding him to the wall and let the dagger drop from your hands.

"Come on, I'm canceling the rest of the masquerade, the only person who matters to me right now is you. Were going to my room and you're going to sleep for the first time in god knows when."

"Thank you y/n..."

You look up at him perplexed.

"For caring for me."

He looked so vulnerable. You paused and looked up at him, "Not for caring, for loving you."
