[We start off on this journey as the familiar strumming of a guitar. The embers of a campfire are seen going upwards, as screams echo throughout the forest.]
"It's not about survival.. It's about being strong." - Ralph Karrenburg
The Observer: "Ralph Karrenburg was a Wehrmacht soldier who never believed in the regime's cause. But joined the military out of a sense of duty to protect his family."
[A young child with small sparkly stars in his pupils was seen intently staring in awe as the old woman in front of him spoke.]
The Observer: "Ralph was raised in a small village near the Black Forest, a place of ancient trees that whispered folklore. Growing up, he was captivated by his grandmother's stories of shadowy creatures that lurked in the forest, drawn to those who had tasted fear. These tails, though terrifying, somehow felt almost comforting to him a connection to a world much larger than war and politics."
[The small face of the child slowly transitions into the face of a young man. A man whose innocence has been spoiled by the horrors of war.]
The Observer: "In 1944 Ralph's unit was deployed to the Eastern Front, where survival became a matter of luck more than skill. The brutality he witnessed took a toll on him. His comrades fell one by one, and he grew numb to the horror surrounding him. But as the line shifted and broke under relentless assaults, Ralph found himself separated from his unit in a chaotic retreat. Wandering through the cold, dense woods, he stumbled upon an old, abandoned church in a clearing, its windows darkened and vines creeping up the crumbling walls. Exhausted he took refuge."
[Laying on one of the pews of the church. Ralph is seen staring at the ceiling of the church, before finally beginning to drift off to sleep.]
