We returned to the clearing, the night sky a vast canvas of stars. I set the heart upon the altar we made earlier.
The candles flickering in response to the energy surrounding us. Jungkook stood before the altar, his eyes filled with determination.
He kneeled before the beating heart and started chanting in a language I couldn't fathom.
He then stood up and I retrieved the goblet per his request.
Jungkook looked at it longingly. "Now what Jungkook?"
He averted his gaze behind me, towards the coffin. His coffin. I followed his gaze and my breath hitched.
Reality hit me like a truck. That the man standing there with me is not alive.
He is just a reflection of what he was. A fragment of his broken self. Then I understood what I had to do.
As I reached his coffin, set at the edge of the trees, a soft glow lingered around us, casting an ethereal hue.
I could barely look at him-his expression was open, vulnerable, his dark eyes glistening with the last fragments of sorrow, hope, and something unnameable. He looked other worldly.
I neared the worn coffin and opened the lid with one hand. The other one holding the still warm pulsating heart with care. Oh the irony!
When I opened the coffin that gave away with a creack, my heart clenched. Inside lay his true body, so eerily serene and lifelike, as if he were only asleep.
His hands rested on his chest, the same way I had seen him lie in his darkest moments. The emptiness in the center of his chest-a hollow, black cavity-was like a wound that had never healed.
My heart stuttered as I held his still-beating heart in my trembling hands, feeling its fragile rhythm, each beat a painful reminder of all he had lost.
I looked behind to see the Jungkook that's been with me till now. He stood there with a vulnerable face, watching me with glistening doe eyes. "Won't come here Jungkook? This is the most important part of the ritual"
"I am not allowed to..." He hung his head facing the earth. " I can't see myself, my body during the ritual " he mumbled.
My heart broke for the male. With quivering lips I tried to say 'I-It's okay J-jungkook...'
With shaky hands I took the hands of the sleeping man and removed them from his chest... showing the cavity in the middle of his chest, as black as his sorrows...as deep as his love.
I gently placed the pulsating organ in its rightful place and returned his hands where they were.
At that point I broke down completely looking at the pale face of the man when tears rolled down from his closed eyes. Gasping I turned around to say" Jungkoo-"
