For some reason, Alain had always been called tunnel-visioned when it came to things he was serious about.

This was very much not true, however

In fact, he'd heard the subtle ticking of the bomb a whole thirty seconds before it blew up.

Thanks to that, he was able to duck under a table in time, allowing himself to avoid the explosion.

Not that it would have been the end of the world if he couldn't, however.

Though the bomb itself was a trivial matter that only messed up his plans for two minutes at most, its meaning was all the more important than the action itself.

The mere existence of that bomb means someone other than the Midnight Cross with murderous intent at the party tonight.

And their target is probably Alain himself.

After all, who wouldn't want a chance to take down Alain Nova?

Honestly, they'd probably get rewarded.

Finally taking out the nation's greatest threat. A lot of people probably dreamed of that.

Oh, if only they knew the full story.

The media liked to hype up his actions, making him seem like some kind of serial killer who murdered people for the sake of killing.

Oh well, it's not like he'd ever protest their strange conclusions.

After all, it isn't exactly his life goal to make everyone love him.

In fact, he'd be worried if everyone loved him, especially given his track record.

Once the smoke finally clears away enough to see, he gets up from under the table and scans the room.

As he'd expected, the room was empty.

Of course it is.

There's no way the person who set the bomb would be stupid enough to-

"Hello."

Alain spins around at the sudden voice behind him only to find a young woman slightly shorter than him standing before him.

He studies her face, but her name doesn't come to mind.

She must be unaffiliated with his targets.

"Why are you here? It's dangerous. You should go." Alain urges.

"You killed someone." The young woman states.

"I killed two people." Alain corrects. "I told you to leave. Go."

"I'm not afraid of you."

"You should be. I'm serious. If you're unaffiliated, please leave."

"I'm sorry, are you...expecting your targets to just...wait around for their turn to die?" She asks.

"Of course not! I just want there to be as few civilian casualties as possible." Alain explains.

"You killed my client."

Alain freezes at the bitterness laced through her voice.

Her client?

He thinks back on his murders.

He'd only killed that Alder guy and Jonathan.

"Your client?"

"I knew this would happen. That Jonathan was fully unprepared to accomplish anything tonight. That's why they sent me as backup."
