Getting out of bed was hard that morning, especially after sharing such a warm, quiet moment with Caitlyn. Leaving the comfort of her embrace felt like a sacrifice, and you'd have given anything to free her from her responsibilities for just one day—to spend a little more time with only each other.
After last night, the two of you found yourselves dressing together in the same room. You couldn't help but steal glances whenever you could, pausing each time to take in the sight of her as long as possible.
Once she was fully suited up in her Enforcer uniform, the two of you left her room and headed down to the kitchen in her sprawling, multi-story home. By now, you'd grown used to walking its halls, though that didn't make the sheer size of her house feel any less excessive.
When you reached the kitchen, Caitlyn took a seat as you darted straight to the stove. Cooking might not have been your strongest skill, but you could certainly manage a breakfast she'd actually enjoy.
"What're you doing?" Caitlyn asked, raising an eyebrow with a soft smile. Watching you rush to make her a meal stirred something warm in her chest. If only you were her wife, she thought, then she could enjoy moments like this every day.
She quickly brushed those thoughts aside, her smile lingering as you answered.
"Cooking. What else does one do in a kitchen?" you teased, a playful light in your voice. Caitlyn chuckled softly, knowing full well you were just having fun.
"Well, I can think of something else."
Your heart skipped a beat, and your face flushed deep red the moment the words left her lips.
"Sorry, what?" you mumbled, spinning around to look at her, eyebrows furrowed as you tried not to look too shocked. Caitlyn just smiled, waving a dismissive hand as she rested her elbow on the island, leaning her chin into her palm.
"Nothing, Y/N. I love you~."
Her soft chuckle followed, her usually bright eyes half-lidded with a sultry glint. The way she drew out the last vowel in "I love you" told you she was backpedaling, trying to play it off—but she wasn't fooling anyone. You'd heard her loud and clear.
You smile, giving her a look. "I love you too, Cait." as those words reach her ears, a slight pink color dusts her cheeks. Her gaze softens and shifts, darting around your face subtly as if she's trying to take you in, burn your appearance into her memory.
You turn back around, wordlessly picking up a pan to start scrambling some eggs. They were closest to hand and, honestly, one of the few things you really knew how to cook. You hadn't spent much time around Jericho, a fact you were beginning to regret. If you had, maybe you'd have a more impressive breakfast to make for Caitlyn.
Still, as the eggs started coming together, you felt a bit more confident. You tossed in your favorite seasonings, plated the eggs, fried up some bacon, and set everything neatly on a plate before placing it in front of Caitlyn.
"You didn't have to cook for me, love," she murmured, smiling despite her words. Her eyes were practically sparkling, and you could tell she was holding back a more enthusiastic reaction, trying to keep a straight face—maybe to make her own words a bit more believable.
"Well, yeah, but I wanted to do something nice for you." The words slip out before you even think them over. This happened often, but thankfully, this time, they were kind words—ones that felt all the more genuine for being unfiltered.
Caitlyn smiles up at you before she begins eating, and you settle into the chair across from her. She takes a few bites, then pauses, glancing at you with a flicker of concern in her bright blue eyes. "Aren't you going to eat?" she asks, setting her fork down.
