The wind blew, whispering through the trees. The driads shivered, pulling themselves deep into the tree trunks. Small creatures hid as the werewolf crashed through the underbrush in fear. The centaur herd, hearing the beast's dreadful howls coming closer, rushed out of the forest and fled across the meadow. The werewolf could barely make out their flowing tails in the distance as it broke the treeline. The werewolf stopped, eyes darting wildly, looking for anything it could use against the force pursuing it. A flash of color caught its attention. In desperation, the beast all others feared rushed toward the pumpkin patch. Using its wicked claws, it quickly carved a hideous face into the biggest pumpkin. Hoping the carving would scare his pursuer, he hid behind it.
The sudden overwhelming silence ate at the werewolf's last nerve. With one claw, he jabbed a hole in the back of the huge gourd so he could peek through its carved eyes toward the forest.
The wind suddenly picked up, as if it was only waiting for his attention. Leaves swirled into a devilish whirlwind, only to suddenly fall to the ground in front of the carved pumpkin. The werewolf shivered in apprehension. Slowly, the pumpkin spun in place.
The werewolf took a hesitant step backward, then another. The slow movement of the pumpkin stopped when its gaping maw faced the beast in front of it. With a suddenness that made the werewolf gasp, a light shown from within the carved gourd, its carved fangs casting long shadows toward the predator before it, as if the thing carved by the werewolf was preparing to devour its creator. With a fearful yipe, the werewolf leaped away, quickly disappearing over the horizon.
The willow-o-the-wisp giggled as it floated out of the hole in the back of the pumpkin. Spinning upward, it generated a whistling wind, calling to its small, mischievous, swarm. The little lights came promptly, flowing out of the forest, across the field, and through the carved eyes of the giant pumpkin.
They spent the night feasting on pumpkin seeds.
