Hi everyone! This is my first story so sorry if it's really bad. I appreciate any feedback and ideas, but please no hate. Enjoy!

"Aliyah!" My mum yelled up the stairs.

I grunted and rolled over in my bed, snuggling into my duvet. I heard footsteps thump up the stairs, and my door swung open. I was suddenly blinded by a harsh light, as my mum ripped the curtains open.

"Mum!" I whined, covering my face with my pillow. She pulled the cosy duvet off my body, and I groaned at the loss of warmth.

"Come on, out of bed! You don't want to be late on your fist day back at school!" She marched out the room as I sighed and rolled out of bed, running my fingers through my tangled hair.

I sat in front of my mirror, and sighed as I stared at the sorry sight in front of me. I opened my make up bag and attempted to make myself look a little less frightening. I applied some concealer to hide my dark circles, neatened up my eyebrows then moved onto my eyes. I drew a thin line of black eyeliner over my top lid, and finally some mascara.

After sorting out my hair, brushing my teeth and putting on my hideous school uniform, I walked downstairs to the kitchen just as my phone buzzed.

From: Dan

Sorry, I overslept so I'm gonna be late. See you at school.

Looks like I'll be taking the bus today. Daniel usually gives me a lift to school, because he lives right next door to me and I don't have my own car. There's no way my mum would ever buy me a car.

From: Ali

Why am I not surprised? Haha, it's fine, see you later.

Dan is my oldest friend. We have been very close since we were toddlers, ever since my family moved into the house next to his. He's like a brother to me.

I grabbed a cereal bar and filled up my bottle with water. I shoved them into my bag as I opened the front door, and shouted bye up the stairs to my mum. I rushed outside and slammed the door behind me before I could get a reply.

As soon as I got outside, I rolled up my skirt so it wasn't revoltingly long, shortened my tie, plugged my earphones into my iPhone and made my way to the bus stop.

"Ali!"

I slammed my locker shut and turned to see Elissa running towards me with a huge grin on her face, as usual. We've been friends for 3 years, since year 10 when we got put next to each other in the same art class; She had accidentally splashed paint all over my work and got into such hysterics as she wouldn't stop apologising. I just saw the funny side of it, and started laughing. She looked confused at first but started laughing too, until our teacher told us to shut up. We've been friends ever since.

"Hey Elissa" I greeted her with a half-hearted smile. I haven't genuinely smiled since 'it' happened. Since that day almost a year ago when my whole life came crashing down around me.

"Can I see your new timetable?" she asked.

"Sure" I said, handing it to her. Her eyes narrowed as she inspected it, her straight, blonde hair falling in front of her face.

Once she read it through, she looked up with a smile, "we still have most of our lessons together".

"Good" I nodded. I glanced over her shoulder to see Harriet getting some books from her locker down the hall. Me and Harriet have known each other since primary school, but only became good friends in secondary. She's quite a shy person and I had never really spoken to her much before secondary school.
