"Mom, Mister Eyes said that he'll be hiding under my bed today, please check it?" I said while tightly hugging the covers right under my neck.
My mom smiled, at the time I didn't understand how she could be so confident when she was about to look at the horrors beyond our world. Maybe it was because she was always so tall and strong, she knew she could defeat anything, or at least I thought she could.
My mom is always smiling, her bright personality is just overshadowed by her bright red hair. She is like a princess, the bravest of them, every day He tells me where he is hiding and every day she sends Him away.
"Honey, remember what I told you? How can we change the world when we are scared of monsters?."
You can't.
I don't know what, but this time it was different. I saw the shadows under the bed begin to fill the floor, she lost her smile, worry was apparent on her face, and from the shadows, one figure began to emerge.
Two, four, six, eight gray human arms, each of them covered with protuberant eyes, some unblinking, others looking everywhere in an insane confusion and some staring at me and my mom pushed out of the shadow, almost like forcing itself into existence. Its mouth filled with a bigger and pulsating eye, and the upper part of his head was just a completely smooth surface, almost like a sick joke by the universe.
When he completely left the shadows, I truly saw him, his chest was an amalgamation of muscles, bulbous and uneven parts made his posture crooked, and in the middle of where his belly should be there was an opening with tens, maybe hundreds of tiny teeth. But the thing that made it even more unnerving to me was that the eyes didn't stop at the arms, they continued everywhere, his back, his chest, his legs. I could not escape his gaze, no one could.
He was massive, he had to hunch down to not reach the ceiling, and each step made the floor tremble, my mom was faster, she grabbed me, beginning to run out of the room, my father quickly realized what was happening and closed the door behind us.
I don't remember what was said between them, I was too focused on hearing him calling my name, after some discussion, my mother started to take me out of the house, but she didn't get far enough, I guess that the plan was to set the house on fire, fire is efficient against this things, but something has gone wrong, at least I hope, they wouldn't try to kill us all just to kill a monster.
My mom fell, I don't know if she died there or later, but as my head hit the floor, the pain was the least of my worries, I could clearly see its form, his body seemed to flicker as the flames tried to consume it, the heat emanating from the house was way too much for me.
The sound of my alarm clock beeping over and over again takes me out of my usual nightmare, my eyes flicker open, and I don't move. Maybe if I stand still for just two more seconds my energy will be replenished. I manage to see one of his eyes on the slightly ajar closet door. I feel his intense gaze upon me, and even though I make no effort to look at it, I can feel his presence, he is always there, always with me, even in my dreams.
I look at my bedside table, between a jar with water, my crossbow, and a pack of cigarettes my open pill organizer is the only one to tell me good morning, the rainbow-colored compartment, one color for each day of the week, is the only sense of life in my apartment, which is ironic since there's not been one day where I don't about ending myself by taking all of these pills at the same time.
