"So what, you should focus on tonight. Damn that constant talk about the match? Boooooring," Alex said to Lamine.

She had been teasing him about it for the last several minutes, clearly enjoying how easily she could get under Lamine's skin.

"Look, it's like a job to me, just as your job would stress you out!" Lamine hissed.

They were always arguing. It was almost routine by now—Alex pushing until Lamine snapped, Lamine pretending he wasn't bothered until he inevitably was.

I barely listened.

My attention kept drifting toward Hector.

And Valentina.

They were both sitting across from me, unusually quiet.

Too quiet.

My stomach tightened.

They knew.

Well, Valentina knew for sure.

She hadn't meant to see anything. She hadn't meant to walk in at the wrong moment or notice the way Hector looked at me when he thought nobody was watching.

But she'd seen.

She'd put everything together.

And ever since then, Hector and I had been living with the same quiet fear.

One wrong look.

One careless touch.

One person noticing that we always seemed to disappear at the same time.

And now Valentina was sitting right there, watching us without actually watching us.

It was terrifying.

"Sophie, you there?"

I looked up.

Alex was staring at me.

"I'm literally trying to get your support. Please tell him that he's annoying!"

I glanced at Lamine, then back at Alex.

For half a second, I forgot what we'd even been talking about.

"Oh, yeah, totally."

I took Alex's side.

Lamine's eyebrows lifted.

"You against me? Wow. The last thing I expected."

He leaned farther back against the couch, looking genuinely offended.

Alex grinned like she'd just won something.

Hector laughed quietly.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Just for a second.

It was nothing.

It couldn't have meant anything.

But Valentina noticed.

My heart dropped.

I immediately looked away.

Hector did the same.

Nobody said anything.

"Man, I think the party is exactly the thing you need," Hector said, stepping into the conversation. His voice was calm, almost deliberately normal. "Just chill out and we're gonna worry tomorrow. We have plenty of time."
