Today was my first day starting at a new school. I was in a different state, going to a different school, and the worst part of it all was that it wasn't even the beginning of the year. Ever since I could remember I lived in that one state, that one town. Yeah, I'd travel to other states to watch my dad play, but living in a state where I had no friends, and no memory of being was a complete nightmare.
A few months ago my dad passed away, due to a— hockey accident. My mom thought that it would be so fantastical to move to my dad's home town, my brother— ecstatic, he'd be hockey royalty. Me? Not so much, I didn't want to leave my team, my friends. I had to though, the only good thing about moving is that the school I was transferring to had an amazing soccer team.
I could also play hockey, but when my dad died it triggered something in me... and I haven't been on ice since. I felt bad because the girls were excited to find out that I was going to their school, that excitement quickly died when they found out that I stopped playing hockey, I actually stopped doing anything that required me to be on the ice.
I know it hurt people for me to not go on the ice, but it hurt me a heck of a little more because I loved the ice. The cool air filling my lungs, everything disappearing as soon as I stepped on ice. My whole life was on ice and I loved that.
Anyway, my brother, Cameron walked into my room. "You gonna watch me practice?
"Yeah, I know they're happy that they have atleast one of us on these teams." I messed his hair up pushing him away.
"It'd be fun if we were doing it together. You know, like old times." He sadly chuckled, with a slight smile-frown.
My brother and I have been skating together since we were in diapers. We were literally known as the ice twins when we were younger. It broke his heart when I stopped skating, he won't admit it, but I know.
I walked over to hug him, "I'll be back on the ice one day. I mean, it's my whole life." My eyes burned with tears, but I wasn't gonna let them come out.
"Kids, come on. Or you'll be late!" Mom yelled from downstairs.
"Mom, no one ever gets anywhere in life by being early. Look at Troy HSM!" I responded to her.
"Camilla Ameena Stanley Deveraux!" My brother and I look at each other before we grab our bags and run downstairs.
"Sorry, mommy." I say with a forced smile, I'm too young to die, so I'd rather be safe than sorry.
"Mm-hmm. I packed you lunches, be safe my babies." She pinched our cheeks, hugging us.
"You packed us lunches? Mom we're not in-" My brother opened his lunch box, "Shii-oot, Thanks mom."
"Thanks mom." I say to her before walking out the door.
After a few minutes of fighting over who's driving my brother finally drove off so we could get to school. We arrived at the school and we were literally no where near being late.
When my brother and I walked into the school, eyes were literally on us. I mean, I'm no stranger to the public eye, but people looking at me up close, I really hate that. "Yeah, no." I turn to walk out, but my brother grabs me.
"Mom said we gotta make friends."
I sigh looking at him, "Why do they have to look at us?"
"Hi, you must be the Deveraux twins? I'm Katie and I'm your guide." She smiles at us, very big smiles, especially at my brother ew. "Schedules are on your phones, school app. If you play sports which- I'm sure you do, you have team sports or it'll say physical Ed, I'm not really sure. We have a certain place for every sport. We're one of the biggest sports schools in the district so, you know, there's a building for the girls and boys hockey teams on the other side along with figure skating, then there's the gyms for basketball and volleyball girl and boys, uh."
They have a lot of stuff at this school, must be why a lot of athletes and stuff come here, "There's the gymnastics gym, uh, then the fields for lacrosse, football, flag football, uh, soccer, baseball, and other stuff. Then there's the swimming pool, and I really hope that's all in the sport department because well, I don't wanna say that again."
"Yeah, because that was a lot of stuff." I looked at her.
"Yeah, this schools main purpose is to have the greatest athletes and performers of all time. I would show you, but that's too much work, you have maps. Please, use them and if you need help, Just call." With that she walked away.
My brother and I look at each other before we busted out laughing, "I guess we'll have to find our own way to class."
