 30 minuets before the fall

Nick was laying on the couch watching TV, he just had his 10th birthday and he was high on sugar from the candy and cake he was given only a few hours ago, but sadly he was getting tired from the sugar crash and he fell asleep right there on the couch.

30 minuets later

"Nick wake up!" Nick was awoken by his older sister, Katie.

"We've got to go." Nick's mom explained in a softer tone. Just then a mutated broke through the door and ran towards Nick's mom. BANG! The mutated was shot by Nick's dad. Katie picked Nick up and the family ran towards their truck. The city was in chaos, as soon as Nick was outside the scent of smoke and the sound of people running and screaming filled the air. A news helicopter was trying to help people stuck on high buildings but a mutated jumped into a propeller getting it stuck causing the helicopter to crash killing everyone inside. Nick's dad made sure all of them were in the truck and drove as fast as he could, careful not to hit anyone on the way. Nick was in the back scared out of his mind while his sister was trying to calm him down.

Then, the car was hit by something and spun out of control and  flew off of the highway hitting a tree. Nick was knocked out by the impact but was woken up by the sound of a mutated banging on the car window. BANG! Katie shot the mutated with her dad's gun, breaking the glass. Katie helped Nick out of the car and for a split moment he saw his mom and dad get ripped to shreds. Katie just made him run as fast and far away from the scene as humanly possible.

5 years later

Nick jolted awake at the nightmare he had. Nick got out of his bed and go dressed. "Nick you up?" Katie asked from the other side of the door. "Yeah!" Nick replied opening the door to see Katie standing outside, she looked frustrated. "What's wrong kat?" Nick asked. Katie shrugged. Nick knew that something was up but didn't press the issue further.

"Listen I just need you to stay here, don't cause chaos, I just need to finish some stuff with Nathan." Katie explained to Nick. "But I love causing chaos!" Nick said jokingly trying to sound sad. Katie just laughed, said bye and left.

Nick sighed and went back into his room and began writing in his journal, then an idea came to his mind. Nick got up and left the house. The military was able to quarantine some cities off after the outbreak making a pretty decent way to live in post apocalyptic America.  That is if you were in a well managed  QZ (quarantine zone) but Nick wasn't lucky enough to live in one of those, seeing and hearing horrible things were all common place, people were robbed, killed, and kidnapped almost on the daily, and what did the Military group in charge of this QZ do about it? Nothing. They did absolutely nothing except stand there with guns in there hands looking pretty.

Nick was visiting a particularly sketchy part of the QZ. "Hey Nick, my man!" Nick's friend, Victor said.

"Hey V, how's it going?" Nick asked. Victor just shrugged and suddenly looked serious.

"Listen there's been some sort of group running around here screwing things up, and I have a contact who had there ID stolen by the group, if we get it back from them and return it to him he'll pay us more than if we just stole the damn thing and sold it  ourselves!" Victor explained.

Some form of money is something that shouldn't exist in the apocalypse, but it does, in QZ's to tell if someone is from one QZ or another they have different forms of money, usually they would look at your ID that people are supposed to carry at all times but if you don't have it for whatever reason they look at the money you have, to stop people from thinking that ID's aren't the  only way for the military to figure out where you're from, a ton of information is hidden from the public, the only reason Nick knows is because Victor knows. Now what do you use the money for? Various things like extra water, food, weapons, ammo or clothes. Which results in  a LOT of organized crime to get as much of it as humanly possible, and people like to steal and sell ID for money because what's left of the government doesn't care how you look in the image as long as your recorded birthdates, and names match.

"How dangerous is the group?" Nick asked.

"pretty dangerous but they won't go to extreme lengths to make sure you die if you screw with them." Victor explained.

"Alright let's do this then."
