Electricity Travels Any Distance

Chapter 1

I was walking along a dirt path on my way towards the village of Ritou. Ritou was famous for its fishing; however, it was well known that it was where outlanders without a travel permit stopped by. I had tried fishing there before, but I was tired of always catching bitter pufferfish. They always tasted like salt, and it was never a decent texture, plus the smell was always sour and lingering.

I was on my way to the village for an inspection: an official order from the Shogun. I never really understood why I had to listen to that puppet, but it's fine—my sister said that whatever it told me was basically coming from her.

Looking around, things looked a bit different than usual. A string of lights caught the corner of my eye. Next to it the Amur Maple trees were duller than usual, and it seemed like they were dying. I loved the color they shed this time of year. It would be nice if the eternal rain reached these parts. The smell of fresh air and the faint smell of Amakumo that rode the wind were gone. It was strange; never had I not smelled the purple fruit, but now all I could smell was dirt and smoke.

I was shocked when I was suddenly in front of a huge rock shrine. It was like the tales of the shrines in Mondstat... castles! That's what it was, but what was this doing here without a permit? I began to strut to it, disappointed in how we could have missed this construction... on how I could have missed this. It was my job to inspect the islands besides the main one. I walked into the yard and followed the path to a bench that was near a few doors. I didn't want to be rude and chose to wait until someone arrived to fine them the 100 million mora they now owed.

"You're not a muggle, are you?" A boy a bit older-looking spoke, speaking in some foreign language. He was wearing a long black kimono with a white button-up and black pants that reached his... sandals. I gasped softly, surprised by the intricate craftsmanship of his sandals.
