"Hyunjin, my office. Now." Bangchan's voice cut through the peaceful hum of the station, making everyone look up. Hyunjin's head snapped towards him, pulse quickening as the other officers turned to watch. He stood up, trying to project a calm he didn't quite feel.
"Oooh, someone's in trouble," Jisung teased, grinning like a little boy, witnessing a schoolyard scolding. Snickers spread through the room, a few officers joining into the childish act.
Hyunjin just shook his head, chuckling as he made his way toward Bangchan's office, trying to ignore the sudden attention. As the door clicked shut behind him, a heavy silence fell over the room, much like the stillness before a storm. Officers who had been moving about or engaged in their own conversations froze, their attention riveted on the closed door, a shared understanding that something significant was about to unfold.
The air in Bangchan's office was thick with palpable tension, the curtains drawn casting an intimidating aura. Shadows draped over the walls, and the space between Bangchan and Hyunjin felt charged, like a rubber band ready to snap. Bangchan sat behind his desk, leaning forward with fingers steepled as he studied Hyunjin with a gaze sharp enough to cut glass.
"Sit down," Bangchan's voice was a low rumble, shaking Hyunjin's core.
Hyunjin took a seat, meeting his gaze confidently, without a flinch. There was a defiant set to his jaw, and he didn't even blink as Bangchan's silence hung, a silent demand that would have unsettled any officer who sat in that chair.
"How is Felix doing? I assume you would know, since you've been visiting him everyday." He placed his head on his hands, carefully observing Hyunjin's features.
"I know for a fact you didn't call me in to discuss Felix's progress. Just cut to the chase, Chan." Hyunjin crossed his arms on his chest, and leaned back into his seat.
Bangchan let the silence stretch painfully long before he finally spoke. "Tell me what's going on with Felix." His tone was controlled, but with the weight of a command behind it.
Hyunjin raised a brow, barely giving any ground. "Felix is fine. He's just had a rough few days—"
"I'm not asking for the polite version, Hyunjin." Bangchan's eyes narrowed, his voice dropping an octave. "You're hiding something. And I'll remind you that I can make life a lot harder around here if you don't come clean."
Hyunjin shifted slightly, a glint of defiance flashing in his eyes. "With all due respect, sir, Felix has been going through something personal. It's not my place to share the details."
Bangchan leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near growl. "And you think protecting him means lying to your team leader? Don't be naive, Hyunjin. This isn't about your friendship. It's about the safety of this entire station."
"I would never put Felix in danger, let alone this station," Hyunjin shot back, his voice steady.
"Then prove it," Bangchan challenged. "Right now, you're not acting like someone who's thinking about the team. This"—he gestured between them—"isn't about keeping a friend's little secret. This is about the fact that you're willing to risk your career, your position here, just to keep something from me. Do you really think that makes you trustworthy?"
Hyunjin didn't even dare to blink. His spine was rigid, shoulders stiff "The only thing at risk here is Felix's trust in me, and that's something I won't break. Not for the president, Not for anyone."
A heavy silence fell, as Bangchan's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. His voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "You may think you're doing him a favor, but you're only hurting him, Hyunjin. When you lie to me—when you cover for him—you're putting him at risk. Relationships like yours... they tend to ruin a team. Don't make me remind you what's on the line here."
