I sat behind the reception desk, half-heartedly organizing files and glancing at the clock every few minutes. Just a little longer, and I could go home and collapse into bed. I was so lost in my daydreams that I barely noticed Melissa approaching."Hey, Lina." she greeted me with a grin.
"Hey, Ms. McCall," I replied, snapping back to reality.
She sighed dramatically. "How many times have I told you to call me Melissa?"
I chuckled. "Honestly? I've lost count."
She motioned to a stack of supplies nearby. "If you're not too busy, could you help me put some of those away?"
"Of course," I replied with a playful smile. "That's what I'm here for."
I got up and made my way to the shelves, chatting with Melissa as we worked. All the while, I couldn't help but side-eye a boy sprawled across not one, not two, but three seats in the waiting area. He had shifted from his previous face-down, ass up position to something marginally better, but no less awkward as he continued his seemingly suggestive and concerning muttering.
Just then, Lydia's father stepped out of her room, hands on his hips as he sighed. "Has he been here all night?"
"All weekend," Melissa corrected.
As I bent down to dispose of some trash, another disturbing bit of commentary escaped Buzz Cut's mouth: "You're dirty." I paused mid-motion, trying not to laugh as I backed away quickly. His eyes flicked open, and I made sure to keep my distance.
After an hour of mind-numbing file organizing, my stomach growled so loudly I pressed my hands over it in a futile attempt to shut it up. On my way to the vending machine, a loud crash echoed down the hall, and I quickened my pace. Rounding the corner, I was greeted by a scene of disaster: the vending machine was toppled over, and Buzz Cut Boy stood next to it, looking stunned.
After a few beats of awkward silence, I broke it. "Seriously, dude?! Did you body-slam the thing?"
He froze, still staring at the fallen machine. "Okay, in my defense, it looked sturdy, and I thought a little shake wouldn't hurt."
"A little shake? The whole thing's on the floor." I sighed, a bewildered laugh escaping. "Hate to break it to you, but I don't think a Snickers bar is worth death by vending machine."
"It was actually a Reese's."
"Oh, well, in that case—" My attempt to diffuse the moment was cut short by a piercing shriek echoing down the hallway.
We exchanged alarmed glances before sprinting toward the source of the scream—Lydia's room. Throwing open the bathroom door, we found no sign of her, just an overflowing bathtub and an unsettling open window.
After combing the hospital hallways, we finally tracked down Sheriff Stilinski to give him the rundown.
"Naked? As in... nude?" he asked, raising his eyebrows in disbelief.
"Pretty sure those mean the same thing, Sheriff. But yes—she left here, uh, clothing optional," Melissa replied.
"And you checked every inch of this place?"
"Every last corner," I confirmed with a firm nod.
"Nothing out of the ordinary?"
"Nothing. She just... vanished."
The sheriff let out a heavy sigh. "Alright. Let's get an APB out for a sixteen-year-old redhead. Any other details?"
Almost on cue, his son appeared from the shadows, as if waiting for this moment. "She's five-three, green eyes, fair skin. And her hair—it's actually strawberry blonde."
