Phileas Fogg reached the club and went to the dining room. He sat down at his usual table. His lunch was broiled fish with sauce, roast meat with mushrooms, a gooseberry tart,a slice of Cheshire cheese, and several cups of tea.

Then he read newspapers until dinner time. After dinner, he returned to the reading room. After half an hour, several members of the club came in. They were Mr.Fogg's usual partners at card games:

Andrew Stuart,an engineer; John Sullivan and Samuel Fallentim, Bankers; Thomas Flanagan, a brewer; and Gauthier Ralph, onr of the directors of the Bank of England

All of them were rich and highly respectable

"Well, Ralph" said Thomas Flanagan. "What about that robbery? "

"The bank will lose the money" replied Stuart.

"Great detectives have been sent to look for him at all the main ports of America"

"Do you know what he looks like?" Asked Stuart.

"He doesn't look like a robber at all"

"The daily Telegraph says he's a gentleman,"
Phileas Fogg joined in.

They were talking about an incident that had happened three days ago at the bank of England. About fifty-five thousand pounds had been stolen from the table of the cashier.

The newspaper and the clubs were abuzz with the news of the affair. Ralph was convinced that the reward offered to the detectives would help their energy and effort.

"I think" said Stuart, "The thief will get away"

"But where will he go?" Asked Ralph. "No country is safe for him"

"The world is big enough"

"It was once," said Phileas Fogg

"I agree with Mr.Fogg" said Ralph

But Stuart was not convinced "Just because you can go around it in three months-"

"In eight days," Phileas Fogg interrupted him.

"That is true, Gentlemen" Mr.Sulluvan opened the Daily Telegraph:
