summary* ( can be changed, but premise must stay the same )
⁷⁷⁷ㅤ 𝑮𝒐𝒅 𝑯𝒂𝒔 𝑮𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒏. A drop of rain fell on his hand, bleeding into the palmar creases of his palm, whispering his future to him. He was to marry young under the roof of the chapel in his hometown, bringing two beautiful children into the world and he was to name them after disciples from the Bible, much like he was. He was to bring them to church every Sunday in their Sunday best, and have them repeat the cycle with their wives when they grow old.

Nathaniel Cross wiped his palm dry on his black slacks. It rained often in New York City, and today was not an exception. He sat on the stairs leading up to the front door of the house of God, sheltered from the rain under God's hand. The confessional booth inside was occupied by a different sinner confessing their sins, forcing him to wait on a busy day. His wrist turned over, his watch face facing his so he could tell the time. He was late.

Just as he stood, the door opened, releasing the devil from his cage. Nathaniel turned, watching the blind man walk down the steps of the church. He blinked as the man walked right past him, avoiding him by a hair. Nathaniel's watching eyes followed his body, watching him disappear into the crowd of non-believers and sinners. A pure man in the shape of a devil.

"Nathaniel," he turned. The Father stood in the doorway, awaiting his child to come in for his scheduled confessional. He looked down to his watch, making him seconds more late than he was before. Nathaniel muttered to himself. "Aren't you going to come in?" The Father asked, his hands clasped in front of him.

Without a word, Nathaniel walked off into the rain much like the blind man did a minute before. He was void of an umbrella, the rain seeping into his black pinstriped suit coat. The Father watched him walk off without saying anything, accepting the wordless goodbye from the strange Cross boy. He came to the church almost every day for the past 25 years, joined with his mother and father for the first 20 of those 25.

Nathaniel Cross has been a strange boy since birth. He was a follower of Jesus, Nathaniel of Cana from the Gospel of John. He was quiet and only spoke when spoken to, because that's what his parents told him to do. Nathaniel was the quietest kid in Sunday school. He sat neatly with his Bible, his hands clasped as he prayed for the rambunctious kids around him to quiet down. It never worked, making Nathaniel believe that God liked to play pranks on him to make sure he was paying attention.

He always was. Nathaniel Cross was a watcher, his eyes on alert everywhere he went.
