I held my breath as I slowly pushed open the door to Kritika's room, signaling my parents to be silent and follow me. My heart was racing with equal parts excitement and nervousness ,I wanted this to be perfect for her.
As I crept closer to her bed, I could see her sleeping so peacefully, unaware of the transformation her room had undergone. I took a moment to look around, admiring the work we'd put in.
Delicate strings of fairy lights were draped over her headboard, casting a warm, soothing glow. Colorful balloons bobbed gently near the ceiling, their reflections shimmering in the mirror on her dresser. And in the center of it all sat a towering three-tier cake, adorned with fresh flowers and shimmering gold lettering - "Happy Birthday, Kritika!"
Just as the old clock in the hallway chimed the hour, I leaned in close to my sister's ear and tried to wake her up.
"Di...wake up," I whispered.
"What Vyshu go away I need to sleep!!"she grumbled.
"It's your birthday Di wake up we need to celebrate!"
Her eyes fluttered open, still heavy with sleep, until she registered the unfamiliar sights around her. Suddenly, her face lit up with the most radiant smile. "You...you all did this?" she asked, her voice trembling with emotion. Tears of joy sprang to her eyes as she took in every detail - the twinkling lights, the colorful decor, the cake that seemed to sparkle.
"Of course we did!" I exclaimed, enveloping her in a tight hug.
"How could we not celebrate the most special day for the most special person?"
Our parents chose that moment to pile into the room, each carrying a brightly wrapped gift. "Happy birthday, beta!" they chorused, showering Kritika with hugs and kisses. She was positively glowing, her happiness infectious as we all gathered around.
"You really didn't have to do all this," Kritika said, wiping at her tears. "
"Nonsense!" I chided playfully, handing her my own present.
"We wanted to make this day extra special for you."
As she carefully unwrapped the delicate silver necklace I'd picked out, I watched the way her face lit up. She fastened it around her neck, admiring how the pendant caught the soft light.
"It's so beautiful, Vyshu. Thank you," she said, pulling me into another warm embrace.
In that moment, I knew every bit of effort had been worth it to see my sister this overjoyed. This was her day, and we were going to celebrate it to the fullest.
"Alright, enough of the mushy stuff!" our father interrupted, rubbing his hands together eagerly. "Let's dig into that cake, shall we?"
As we crowded around the table, cutting the cake into equal pieces, I couldn't help but feel a swell of love and joy. Kritika deserved every bit of this - the laughter, the affection, the undivided attention.
I can still remember the day my parents first brought me home - a tiny, scared little girl with no idea what the future held. They had welcomed me into their lives with open arms, showering me with a love I had never known before.
At first, I was so afraid to talk and mingle with people. But Kriti Di refused to let me feel like an outsider. She took me under her wing, treating me like I was her own flesh and blood. Whether it was helping me with my homework, braiding my hair, or simply listening to my childlike worries, she was always there.
Her kindness, her fierce protectiveness, her ability to make me laugh even on my darkest days , these are the things that have shaped me, molded me, made me whole.
My family had become the foundation upon which I built my entire world. I would always be grateful to have them by my side.
We ate the cake , did some dancing until we are tired and head back to our respective bedrooms.
The obnoxious beeping of my alarm jolted me awake, momentarily disorienting me. As my eyes adjusted to the soft morning light filtering through the curtains, the events of last night came rushing back - Kritika's epic birthday surprise, her face lighting up with pure joy.
Quickly, I sprang out of bed, rushing through my morning routine so I could go wish her a proper happy birthday.
When I finally made my way to Kritika's room, I could hear her sweet humming from the other side of the door. Tapping lightly, I poked my head in.
"Good morning, birthday gurl! Sleep well?"
Kritika looked up from where she sat, brushing out her long hair.
"Vyshu!" Her face broke into the most radiant smile.
"I'm still completely blown away by the surprise last night. It was the sweetest thing ever."
"Aw, you know we had to go all out for my favorite sister's big day," I said, plopping down next to her on the bed and planting a kiss on her cheek.
"Anything for our birthday girl!"
"Well, you guys definitely succeeded." Her expression turned thoughtful. "Actually, I was hoping we could plan the party a bit more. I was thinking we could invite some of our close friends to celebrate with us in the evening, maybe at the mansion?"
I nodded enthusiastically. "That's an amazing idea, Di! I'm sure Mama and Papa would be more than happy to host everyone here. It'll be the perfect way to keep the party going."
"Yes and I also need to invite my colleagues or else I would be dead" she exclaimed
Then I suddenly remembered that I need to tell her about Vidur. I have been in a relationship with him for two years now, the guilt of hiding it from her is eating me alive and I need to tell her as soon as possible.
She might be upset for sometime but I hope she understands and help me with talking to my parents about him.
"Di, actually I have been meaning to tell you something for a longtime" I started.
"Vyshu, you know you can tell me anything right." Di looked at me worriedly.
"I know and it's a secret I'll tell you in the party." I smiled at her.
"Are you sure?" she dragged.
"Yah Di, I need to leave now or else I would be late for the college. See you in the evening." I hugged her one last time and got up to head to class.
But I can still see that she was worried.
Anyways, I'll tell her everything today.
