Emily Williams
I slowly opened my eyes, scanning the room with a growing sense of unease. The familiarity of my surroundings did little to calm my racing heart.
My mind began to spin with the unsettling possibility of being watched.
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and reopened them, searching for reassurance.
But the feeling persisted, like a whispered secret in the shadows.
Shrugging off the unease, I threw off the covers and swung my legs over the side of the bed.
A workout, that's what I needed. Endorphins to clear my foggy mind.
After getting ready, I headed downstairs to the gym, the soft hum of the equipment a welcoming distraction.
As I stepped into the room, my dad's cheerful voice cut through my reverie.
"Hey, Emmy!"
I winced, eyes snapping shut in irritation.
"Can't I even workout in peace?" I thought, frustration simmering beneath the surface.
My mind reeled from the recent onslaught of inexplicable events.
Miles's haunting presence still lingered, refusing to be shaken.
"Hello," I muttered, forcing a greeting through gritted teeth.
I began my warm-up, trying to shake off the tension.
"Long time?" Dad asked, his voice grating against my frayed nerves.
I nodded curtly, my eyes fixed on the treadmill.
Long time, indeed.
Since that fateful day, Miles invaded my thoughts.
My world shrunk to the confines of my room.
School was the only exception, a necessary escape.
Even then, I went through the motions, numb and detached.
No socializing, no eating with the family.
The book remained shut, collecting dust.
My isolation was a fragile shield against the turmoil.
Sweat dripped from my brow as I intensified my workout.
Shivers coursed through my body, a lingering echo of the past week's anguish.
After Miles's unsettling appearance, the book transformed into a source of anxiety.
The next day, I hesitantly opened its cover.
My palms grew sweaty, and an eerie feeling crept over me.
It was as if unseen eyes watched my every move.
I slammed the book shut, doubts swirling.
Am I imagining things, or is something real?
