september 2022

as soon as maddie and i finish up, i head to class.

when i walk into the room, it's already half full. ethan's already there, having gotten a small lecture in private after coming to class late one too many times—a fact i found out from luke.

ethan's attention is divided, half on his notebook and half on whatever's going on outside the window. i take my seat beside him. he says nothing, and i'm fine with that.

professor warren starts the class, silencing everyone. she launches into her lecture about the importance of narrative in sports media, which makes me even more excited about my new role.

then she drops a bomb.

"for your next assignment, you'll be paired up for a semester-long project," she announces.

i blink. a semester-long project? great. a huge project that luke's going to be too tired from hockey to work on.

and then, another bomb.

"you'll be working with the person seated next to you."

i freeze, my heart racing and sinking at the same time.

luke shoots me a sympathetic look, mouthing, "you got this." i just sigh.

of course.

of course i get paired with ethan for this.

ethan looks up. "guess we're working together," he says, his voice neutral, like this isn't a big deal at all.

but to me, it kind of is. i nod, forcing a small, "yeah, i guess so."

as everyone starts to leave, ethan stands up and mutters, "don't make this harder than it needs to be," before walking out.

the nerve.

i meet luke at the door, who just smiles at his best friend as we leave.

"ice cream at your place?"

"yup."

when we got to the girls' shared apartment, arabella, stella, and kayleigh were already lounging on the couches, surrounded by snacks and blankets.

"i invited them to eat ice cream with us, if that's okay," luke says, glancing around.

lacy grins softly, "of course, more ice cream is always okay."

stella stretches out for her, looking relaxed. "we were just about to start a movie, perfect timing."

arabella, who's flipping through movies on the tv, looks up and smirks, "luke, you know you're paying for dinner after this, right?"

luke laughs, "yeah, yeah." he turns to face lacy. "and when i have to go to practice later, they'll take you to dinner on me."

lacy can't help but smile. "you really don't have to," she says, sitting on the arm of the couch.

"but i want to, ace," luke replies, offering her a small but sweet smile.

"plus, who says no to free food?" kayleigh jokes, returning with the ice cream bowls.

they settle in, the warmth of the apartment making lacy feel a little more at ease.

almost two months late,
it's been an interesting time.
i know it's a short chapter...but i'll probably post the next one in the morning!
i also wanted to say that  i'm going to post another ethan pov chapter soon.
i want to give more background info
on why ethan kinda resents lacy and
why lacy is so hurt by it.
reminder as well that this book is **ALL FICTION**
i have absolutely no clue on how these boys are and how their families are in real life !!!
