Reece had wanted to make big plans for her first Mother's Day but she didn't want the fuss. With Emery's first birthday coming she already had so much party planning to do. Between that and work she begged him for a day in just the three of them.
He woke early to make sure he got to the florist before she woke. He had made arrangements to come early and get the arrangement of Picasso teal calla lilies. He had been working with the florist for the last two weeks to make sure they could get them in time.
Arriving back home he took them straight to the kitchen and started preparing the berry compote she loved so much. While that was reducing on the stove, he mixed the batter for the pancakes and started them.
He placed everything on the tray with a trained hand and headed upstairs. He was careful to be quiet. He could hear Emery stirring, but he needed to put the tray down first.
He ran down the hall and got Emery changed before returning to the room. Holding the tray in one hand and Emery in the other he settled back on the bed and allowed Emery to crawl to her . She started to rouse and smiled at her boys. "Good morning. What are you two up to?"
He smiled back and beckoned her to sit. When he placed the tray over her lap her eyes widened. "Picasso teal ...oh Reece...how did you ... when did you?"
"This morning. I met the florist right as he opened. Happy Mother's Day, gorgeous." He was beaming with pride and she was speechless. She pulled Emery in close as Reece leaned in to give her a tender kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too. You sweet, sweet man."
Once all three were through eating and after a clean up of little man, he reached into his bedside stand. "I have something for you. Before I give it to you, I want to say something, and I know you know it isn't easy for me to do. Marjorie just a little less than a year ago you became a mother, and I became a father. I know we both had our moments. We didn't exactly have the best models for the roles. Now I can't imagine our life any other way, and I can't imagine doing this with anyone but you. You are an amazing mum, and Emery will always be lucky to have you."
She snuggled the small boy in as tears streamed down her face. He handed her a long, slender box. As she lifted the lid, she saw a silver bracelet with three small moon charms. She looked to Reece. "They are the phases of the moon on the days the three of us were born."
"Darling, I love it. You have really out done yourself. I am ... I didn't ... I love you."
They spent the rest of the day in a state of play and relaxation. To her it was a magical first Mother's Day. Many years later she recounted it as if it were the best she ever had. They both knew he made each one better than the last and he never forgot the Picasso teal calla lilies.
