ANNIE'S P.O.V
The memorable thing about that day was the never ending rainstorm that lasted the whole day, which was a rare occurrence in the month of February which is usually very dry and hot. The weather changes that day went contrary to the weather forecast prediction and there was a lot of criticism on how the weather forecast was totally unreliable.
While the scientists were coming up with theories to explain the unexpected weather changes, she already had her own theory. To her the weather changes marked what was the most important day in her life. A day where a third-rated ballerina makes the decision that could make or mar her.
Life as a third-rated ballerina involves being trampled on, ill treated by both star dancers and directors. It's involved doing the unimaginable to keep your little spot in the company, be it sleeping with different men, resulting in blackmail or any other foul play in your books of tricks to get the best role available for a third-rated ballerina. And if there was an award for the foulest players Annie was certain she would win.
Staring at her newly born baby, she had inherited most of her features except for the blonde hair, she wondered who out of the list of all the men she slept with fathered her. Not that finding the father would help, people in this business were highly selfish and would definitely deny it to preserve what they had.
Her meeting with Fredrick (the CEO of Evan dance company, though not as big as TBC, but one of the most prominent ballet companies in Australia.) at the bar had been coincidental, well of course she recognized him from the get go but pretended not to. He was mourning his late wife back then, and she had played the part of an understanding friend. Their relationship blossomed almost instantly. And of course his parents kicked against their relationship, at Fredrick refusal to call off the engagement, looking for dirt on her they could use against her. Well unfortunately for them she was a better player and covered all her tracks while still feigning the role of a saint.
Life as Fredrick's girlfriend had offered many opportunities at her fingertips, within a few months her pictures were now in the cover page of newspaper, magazines, billboards even in some social media handles. Her life was going great, but of course the past is a pest and soon discovered that she was pregnant.
Just how would she explain that, Frederick was one of the few old school fashion types, who believe in sex after marriage. Just like forever her foster brother took care of everything, came up with the perfect excuse of their foster parent being diagnosed with cancer, and they wished to spend their last moments with them.
It was sad she couldn't keep the baby, but her brother was right, this is a necessary evil for them to live a good life and she could have other kids later.
The door opened and her brother walked in with a woman, “This is the lady I told you about, she is highly recommended and from my research will do the job.” He declared.
Staring at the lady before her, “I am sure my brother must have briefed you, but let me add one thing: this baby should never be traced to me and don't even think of blackmailing me with this, because you have no idea what we're capable of.” She warns sternly.
“You have nothing to worry about, my record speaks for itself. I have been doing this for a long while now and I know how scary the rich can be to protect their secrets, as long as you pay me, I and the baby will disappear forever.” She promised.
“Annie don't do this, I am certain this is not as serious as you think. Fredrick is also a parent, he will understand if you would just talk to him.” Josie pleaded, interrupting them.
Scott Scoffs, “really are you serious, tell Fredrick about the baby and risk losing everything she had built. His family are so against this engagement, and this would be enough to send us back to the street.” He chirped in angrily.
“Fredrick wouldn't let that happen, he is in love with Annie. Please think about your child, she would grow up God knows where, all the abuse she would suffer, you know this better the system sucks _ _”
Annie interrupted her sharply, “You know what, you are not my mother, and just because I took pity on you and employed an unqualified person like yourself as my P.A so you and your family don't starve to death, doesn't make us friends.” Jodie broke down to tears. “Keep your opinion about my life to yourself Jodie, I have made my decision Jodie. ” Turned to the social worker, “Take the baby and go.” She whipped out coldly, her brother smiled pleased.
Jodie was her childhood bestfriend and the only person that knew the real Annie, back then they shared their ordeals at their different foster homes and dreams for the future with each other. And even after she and foster family had relocated to the city, they still kept in touch. Jodie was always so clueless, there was no unconditional love anywhere.
Before the social worker could leave the door, “give me the child, I won't be able to live with myself if I let you take her.”
“What are you doing?” Annie asked perplexed.
Jodie offered her a sad smile, “I thought my bestfriend was still there, but I was wrong she is gone forever. I wish you all the best Annie, but please let me take the baby.” She declared.
Scott Scoffs at her, “you think we are stupid, so you can blackmail us with her later on.”
“Annie I believe you know me better than that, I will never do that to you, and I will also move far away so the baby would never be traced to you.” She stated.
Annie gasped in disdain, “No one is asking this of you, can you just stop trying to play saint.” Paused and sigh, “you are going to feign this isn't equally to your favour, I promised to get you into the company after my wedding, are you going to throw that away too.”
“I guess both of us have different opinions on what is our priority.” Paused, “I don't need anything from you neither will I ask in the future, but whenever you change your mind and want to see your daughter, I am only a phone call away.” She replied, took the baby and walked out of the tiny hospital door.
Before she could say anything, “You know what, let her go we don't need her.” Scott stated.
“You are right, she will definitely regret it and there's no way in hell I will let her back in.” She replied.
While Scott was busy with dismissing the social worker, she looked away. Jodie was an ingrate, after all she had done for her and her family. She is soon to be Frederick Evans’ wife, so she decides who leaves or stays in her life. How dare she try to guilt trip her playing saint, well she can be that, while she will be one of the biggest and most influential ballerinas in Australia.
